I made myself comfortable in an old arm chair and flipped quickly through the pages of the book, taking in the scent of old paper. Along with rain and fresh fallen leaves, paper was one of my favorite smells. The musty smell shows that they can stand the test of time in your memory. You always learn something from what you read, whether you realize it or not.
I leafed through the pages, trying to figure out where I had left off. Luckily for me, I have a good memory and it didn't take long. I took a breath and started reading. It wasn't long before I got wrapped up in the story line. Just as before, the sea captain's wife annoyed me to no end and I promised myself I would never be as needy and jealous as her.
It got later and I hadn't even noticed the time. I had shifted positions a few times because if I stay in one I get all stiff. I was lying on the floor, restlessly kicking my feet and reading in the dim light when the door opened.
"Dinner is ready." Alexander informed me. He seemed much calmer now. Actually this was the first time I had seen him look so relaxed. His hair was slightly messy and he had changed into less formal clothing. I had to try not to stare.
"Kay." I said and continued to finish my paragraph as I stood up. I glanced down at the page number, before closing the book and setting it on the table to finish later. Alexander moved out of my way and let me lead the way, which I didn't like. I never did enjoy leading much of anything.
I bounced down the stairs, enjoying the feeling of movement. I had been sitting still for so long and the stairs reminded me of home. I then followed Alexander into the kitchen, where a nice meal was set out for us. We sat across from each other and didn't say anything at first. I considered many things, but couldn't decide on anything.
"How has your day been?" Alexander asked to break the silence. The words seemed awkward coming from him.
"Not that great, but I've had worse." I answered and then got to thinking about it. Have I had worse? Even when I broke my arm I was having a good time in a moon-bounce. "And yours?" I asked considerately back.
"Same." He answered shortly and without making eye contact. I only nodded and went back to the best lasagna I'd ever eaten. God I love lasagna.
I felt eyes on me and realized that I had forgotten what I had told myself not to do. I had been eating a bit quicker than I had intended, but I couldn't help it! It was just so good. I glanced up at Alexander and smiled sheepishly.
"Sorry, it's really good." I told him and nervously sipped my water.
