Six years old...

I watched the proceedings with curious eyes, as people walked up to my father with stern looks and the slight nodding of their heads. He was in the king's army, my daddy was a solider, a captain, he was respected by all. He didn't seem to respond, but I was a little mad, I didn't like how they looked at daddy with their angry faces. So I pouted and looked up at mommy, she was just staring.

"Mommy, I hate how they look at daddy", I said.

Daddy never made anyone mad, well he did make me mad sometimes, but daddy was my dragon slayer and my dragon slayer was a hero and I was his little princess. I was the only person allowed to be mad at daddy at least that's what granddaddy always said. Yet I was looking at granddaddy and he was still, he was never still for this long and I wondered why.

"Mommy, why isn't granddaddy moving", I asked curiously. He was lying in a burgundy box; he looked different, less like granddaddy Myer.

She looked at me with sad eyes. I looked around; some people were crying and so was grandma, I just couldn't understand why.

"Mommy", I said again, pulling her dress.

"Granddaddy is sleeping sweetheart", she said with a sigh.

"Then why is everyone crying, if he is asleep, is it because he talks too much", I asked curiously.

She chuckled slightly, "No baby", she said.

"Then why", I asked scrunching up my eyebrows frustrated, I really didn't understand.

"Rayne", I heard my father call.

"Yes daddy", I chimed running into his open arms. His eyes were watery, when he looked at me, like mommy's eyes were.

"Hi baby", he said kissing my forehead.

"Don't cry", I said wiping his eyes, "Granddaddy is asleep, he will wake up soon, or should I go wake him", I said excitedly.

"No, let him sleep", father said.

"Why don't you cry when I fall asleep", I asked curiously, I was trying to understand these grownups.

"Well baby, you won't know that I'm crying if you are asleep, will you? he asked.

I thought about it for a minute; he was right because when I go to sleep all I see are horses, unicorns, dragons and Big wolves running around. He walked with me up to grandaddy's bed. I looked at my grandfather I wanted to wake him so he could come home with us if he didn't like his box. Father walked away from grandfather with me in his arms.

"Are we leaving now", I asked, looking to where granddaddy was.

"Yes baby", he answered, I watched my mother fall in step behind him, "Will granddaddy come later".

He didn't answer that as I saw my friend Melanie, I wriggled out of his hand so that he could let me go, I was on the ground before he could stop me as I ran to my best friend.

"Melly, are you coming over today", I said excitedly, "So that we can go see the wolves near the lake", I whispered, so only she could her, it was our secret after all.

"Go away", she said angrily, I was hurt, she was my best friend in the whole wide world, why would she want me to go away. I hadn't seen her in a while because mommy said she was sick.

"Why would you want me to go away, Aren't you feeling better", I asked her softly tears in my eyes now. Her mother grabbed her then.

"Tell your daughter to stay from my Melanie", her mother said, it seemed like everyone stopped, I ran and hid behind my father's leg.
