Chapter 3

-Don’t Tell Jacob-

“Edward?”

“What do you want from me, dammit, half the time you’re in my room you’re here to annoy me and the other half you’re here to destroy me.” Edward had started sitting at his desk, but in one swift moment, he had turned his chair and stood up. His posture told that he was standing his ground, not in the mood for talking. “Bella, if you aren’t here to tell me you love me, then leave,” said Edward, only half kidding.

“Edward,” she repeated, standing in the doorway, “I’ve come to ask you something.”

“Fine. Tell me,” he said hardly, his stance not wavering. Bella’s position did not relax either.

Bella was under the impression that she was the only one who knew about Edward’s love for her. She had no idea that he had admitted it to the entire family while she was being contained, Jacob included. Bella didn’t want Jacob to know because she figured Jacob would maul Edward.

In reality, what had happened was Edward had indeed told the entire family. Jacob’s reaction was to shout some choice words while everyone dragged him outside before he could phase. Edward stayed in the house, sitting, quite calmly actually. Outside, Jacob phased, but everyone was able to control him and he eventually calmed down, too. They brought him back inside and the topic never came up between the two of them again, but it was never forgotten.

So when Bella came to Edward with her strange request, Edward was slightly confused, until he realized that Bella’s knowledge of the people who knew of his love was very minimal. He decided to play along with it.

“Could you not mention to Jacob your umm...” Bella looked at the ground, fishing into her head for the correct wording. “Could you not mention your little crush to Jacob? I think it’s better if he doesn’t know.”

Edward looked at her, figuring everything out, when suddenly an idea formed in his head. It was more than just an idea, it was a threat. It was a cold threat that bubbled up into his brain, signaling a crooked smile at the idea of his new plan.

“Oh Bella, I would never tell Jacob. I know how much it would pain him, to worry he might lose you to me if even the thought crept into his tiny dog brain.” Although the words Edward spoke were so terrible, he was still able to give them a dignified manner. “Oh no, I won’t tell Jacob at all. Say, do your parents know what’s happened to you? Has anyone bothered to tell them you died? How about I do that for you? Actually, I would like to do that for you, as a favor. I will deliver the news personally, much better than just a phone call.”

Bella looked at him apprehensively. “Why would you do that?”

“I’d like to make up for my foolish acts earlier. I honestly regret taking you and changing you into one of us. I can see that it does no benefits for you. I know that nothing I do will ever make that up, but I’d like to try with just a few small favors.” Edward spoke such kind words, trying to suck Bella into his trap.

“Well… it probably is better than a call from Dr. Carlisle,” she reasoned with herself. “What would you say to them?”

“I’d walk up and ring the doorbell, telling them we need to talk, and then I’d ask to come in. We’d probably all sit down in the living room. I would announce that I had news from Dr. Carlisle, saying he couldn’t come himself, so he sent his boy. I would tell them that the news was horrible and to brace themselves.  I’ve actually got quite a pun of a death for you. I’d say you were bitten. They’d be quite worried. It’s not even a lie! They’d ask what you were bitten by and listen to the irony- a dog! I’d tell them you’d gotten a dog bite and lost so much blood that not even my father could have saved you. The dog bite left your body so blood-drained that you were unrecognizable. So no, they could not see the body.”

Bella looked at Edward. “The story is actually well fabricated. As much as I don’t want to tell them and as much as I hate the irony in it, I’m going to let you go ahead and do it. I’m not going to thank you though, since it’s your fault we have to tell them I’m dead anyway.”

“Thank you, Bella, for letting me start trying to repay you for what I’ve done.” The crooked smile did not leave Edward’s face even after Bella left. Her permission for this has set Edward’s entire new plan in motion.  Edward left the house a few minutes later, getting into his Volvo. He turned on the engine and at his usual speed, left the house. Bella’s parents had no idea what was coming for them. For they were never going to find out Edward’s fake story. They were never going to hear that Bella was “dead.” They had a lot more to expect from Edward than just a story.
