The man was back, and so I ran again. I was back at the cliff, and I fell off. Man, I was clumsy. Only this time, there was something new, a new feeling. It was strange, almost like being nervous, but ten times worse. I couldn't think of the word for it. I clung to the edge, peering over the top. Chade came, but the guy with the knife slashed at him, cutting him in a thousand places. "No!" I shouted, and I fell off of the cliff, the strange feeling intensifying. I could think of only one word that could possibly describe this. Fear.

I quickly sat up and looked around. It was just a dream, but there was something different about this one. I had felt something. Was it fear? No, impossible. Or was it? If I was, what had I been afraid of? Falling? No, I've done that a thousand times in dreams but was never scared. The only thing that never happened was Chade was there, but why would that matter? Was I scared of losing him? It would make sense. He was one of my first and only friends. I climbed out of the truck and sat on the hood with him. We sat in silence for a while, just looking at the stars.

"Chade, I was scared," I admitted after a while.

He turned his blank face towards me.

"Scared? Of what?" he asked, surprised.

I looked down and blushed. I was still pretty shy around him.

"I think I was scared of losing you. You're one of my only friends, and I didn't want to lose you," I said, embarrassed.

He stood and looked through the trees.

"I'm flattered, really. You're my first friend too. Now if you will excuse me, I have some work to attend to," he said, slipping away.

I looked after him and sighed. It was strange, being afraid of something for once. It made me feel normal. I walked my way back to the hollowed out trunk he took me to. I sat at the base, tracing the carvings with my finger, wondering about the new experience of fear. I thought of the picture I drew of him, how I had made his facial features. I had depicted him as handsome, and I thought he was. I looked into a puddle, staring at my reflection.

My black hair was messy, and my white shirt was wrinkled. I was strange, with my violet eyes and my fashion choice. I got up and let Chade know I was leaving, then walked back home. I took a shower and got dressed in black jeans and a white jacket, wearing my usual red bow. I walked back out to the woods to see Chade waiting for me at the edge. It became a kind of daily thing, meeting him at the edge. We walked back to his home and sat, talking.

"Don't you have any friends from the nearby town?" he asked.

I shook my head and stared into the puddle again.

"No, they all think I'm too strange, with my purple eyes and what I choose to wear. They all think I'm an evil spirit, or you in human form, trying to trick them. I'm an outcast there," I said, glaring at my reflection.

I was hideous, with my pale skin and long, dark hair.

"Hey, don't be so hard on yourself. I actually think you're clothes are great and that you're quite pretty," he said, lifting my chin to make me look up.

My eyes widened. "No, I'm not, honestly. That's just you, and I'm not sure you're all there sometimes," I teased, poking him.

He poked me back, and I giggled. He poked me again, so I giggled some more.

"So you're ticklish, are you?" he said, tickling me.

"No! Stop," I squealed, falling over.

Funny, I never would have imagined someone like Chade tickling me. He stopped and sat up. I sat up and looked up at him, still smiling.

"Ugh, that crazy dude is back," he said, standing up.

He lifted me into his arms and set me on a branch high in the tree.

"Hey, what are you doing?" I asked.

"Just in case," he said, disappearing into shadows.

I sighed and leaned back against the tree. Why would he even care about me, a simple human? I know i'm the only one who can stand to look at him, even touch him, but just because I can do that doesn't mean he needs to treat me like a child. I'm 18! I'm pretty sure I can take care of myself. He was only a year older than me, well, he was when he was cursed. I sat in boredom, so I took out my notepad and pen and started to sketch again. I drew a picture of Chade standing next to his favorite constellation, and I tried to make what little features he ad seem happy, or maybe hopeful. I got bored with that one, so I started to draw a picture of the woods with the constellations burning bright.

"That's pretty good," Chade said, stepping up behind me.

I quickly flipped to a new page, but he took it away from me.

"Hey, give it back," I complained, reaching for it.

He took a step back and started scribbling on a piece of paper. When he showed me it was a drawing of me. I smiled and snatched it back, drawing a picture of him standing next to me. He chuckled and took it back, flipping to the next page. He drew a picture of himself standing on a trail in the woods, so I drew a picture of me running towards him with my arms outstretched as if wanting a hug. He drew a picture of me asleep leaning against something, so I drew him behind me so it looked like I was leaning against him.

"What, it's what happened," I said, shrugging.

He stole a piece of paper and grabbed my pen. He held it in his hand and squeezed it, until a shadow version of it appeared in his other hand. I stared in awe as he handed me my pen and tucked his and the piece of paper in his breast pocket.

"I didn't know you could do that," I said.

He just nodded and slipped into the dark again. I made sure he wasn't around and drew the vision I had while I was getting dressed that morning. I drew it and quickly folded it up and shoved it into my pocket. He didn't need to know about that one. I climbed out of the tree and set my feet on the ground. I stuck my hands in my jacket pockets and started walking around until I found a fence. I walked along it, running my hand across the top.

I came to a stop in front of a clearing filled with giant silo things and junk. I wandered around when I noticed something on the side of one of the silo things. I took a step closer and noticed it was a page. I didn't touch it, but I read it. The writing was terrible, like a child wrote it. 'It takes you' was what it said. There was a crude drawing of Chade on it, but he looked intimidating. I stepped back and ran into something, and I didn't have to look to know it was Chade.

"You shouldn't be reading those," he said. I nodded and walked with him to a cement tunnel.

"Watch out," he said, throwing me behind him as the crazy dude burst in.
