The crazed man charged us from behind, but as soon as I turned and looked at him he ran screaming like a little girl. Violet peeked around me and watched him leave.

"I don't see why I had to be shoved behind you. As soon as he saw your face he ran, so I would've been fine," she whined, crossing your arms.

"Just a precaution," I said, continuing on my walk.

She followed and looked up at me.

"Thanks for trying to protect me, but I can fend for myself. You don't need to worry about me," she said.

I just kept walking until we reached the edge of the woods.

"You should probably go home and eat something," I said.

She nodded and walked towards her shack. I walked back to my hollowed out trunk and sat, pulling out my paper and pen. I began to draw, and I studied it when I was done. I was holding hands with Violet, and we were looking into each other's eyes. I don't know why I drew it, but I did. It's not like it would ever happen anyways.

Why would she ever like a monster like me? I folded it up and tucked it into my pocket. I reached my mind as far out as it would go, and I found hers on the very edge. She was asleep. That's when I noticed the other presence moving closer towards her. I recognized it immediately. The crazed man with a knife was heading right for her.

I stood and ran as fast as I could to the edge of the woods. From then on I focused on the shadow of the maple I noticed was growing near her home. I turned to darkness and traveled, focusing on that single shadow. When I reappeared I was in front of an old shack. The man had just entered the shack. I ran in and made him turn around and face me.

He dropped the knife and fainted. I quickly picked up Violet and ran. I didn't have enough strength to travel by shadow, so I ran back. The trees were in sight when I stumbled and fell to my knees. Violet woke up and fell out of my arms. I fell to my hands as more and more cuts appeared on my body. A huge gash opened in my back and I fell to the ground. The last thing I remembered was Violet screaming my name and dragging me to the woods. After that everything was dark.

"I can't believe you, Chade," she said, her lip trembling and her eyes watering.

Her blonde hair was whipped around by the wind that appeared in the hospital room.

"I know, I'm sorry," I said, but I screamed in pain and fell to my hands and knees.

"What have you done?" I asked, convulsing with pain.

"I have cursed you for eternity. You have hurt me, and so until you learn what the true meaning of love is, you will be so repulsive nobody shall be able to gaze upon your face without screaming in terror," she said in a wicked voice.

The wind suddenly stopped and she fell back against her pillow. I got up and unsteadily walked over to the mirror. I had no face, and I was too tall to stand up straight in the tiny room. She had cursed me. She was a witch.

I opened my eyes to see Violet sitting next to me, crying. I sat up on my elbows and tried to comfort her.

"Don't cry. I'm fine, and the man is gone," I said, putting an arm around her.

She gasped and stopped crying. She wrapped her arms around me and buried her face in my shoulder.

"I thought I was too late," she said.

I hugged her back and tried to sit up. My back was a little sore, but other than that I was fine. I felt my back and found a dent where the cut had been. It would eventually be gone, but it was still strange. I looked at Violet.

"Are you okay?" I asked. She laughed and wiped her eyes.

"Yeah, I'm fine. You're the one I'm worried about. You risked your own life to save mine. Why?" she asked.

"You're my only friend and companion that can bear to look at me, and I was scared of losing you," I said, getting up.

She nodded and got up. I carried her to the hollowed out oak and set her down so she could continue sleeping. I sat at the base of the tree and thought about what she had asked. I began to realize something insane and impossible. I had begun to fall for her.
