The next few hours my nose was filled with the amazing smell of Christmas ribs and porridge. My Norwegian dad had made sure to bring his traditions all the way down under, and didn't allow us to have anything else for Christmas. I didn't complain, though. I loved his food, and really hoped Calum would too. We had to explain to him why we ate this, and he seemed to get it, though I knew he was doubting that food.
"It's amazing, even better than turkey!" I assured him.
"I'm sure it is, it smells like it" he smiled, and we got to work ourselves. Mine and Calum's cooking job was pretty much to stir the porridge that we were having for lunch. It didn't demand much work, so instead, Calum and I were cuddling arund, kissing and laughing a lot. Eating it was even better, I. of course found the almond that was hidden in it, like always, and won a marzipan pig. That was so stereotypical, my dad explained. The prize would always be that, to every single Norwegian.
"how did you two meet?" Calum asked mum and dad, hoping they would explain the major long distance between them.
"Camila's dad and I met when we were nineteen, on a vacation in Bali" mum answered him proudly.
"I was going there with a couple of friends, and when I saw Catherine, I couldn't keep my hands off her" dad grinned. He gave mum a quick smile before he headed off to find his photos, showing what their life was like in the early days. He handed it to Calum, and we looked through it together.
"That's the day mum and dad met" I explained and pointed to one picture. I had gone through this book so many times with my dad, so I knew it very well.
"You look a lot like your mum!" he then complimented, making us discuss what I would look like at mum's age now.
"I'm at least sure that you'll be the hottest mum on the planet," he finished, when we couldn't come to a conclusion.
The night went fast, and it started getting late. Calum and I were the only ones still up, watching a movie. We had changed to comfortable clothes, and were lying closely underneath the blanket. I felt my eyelids starting to get heavier, so I debated on whether to tell Calum I was tired, causing us to get up and move to the bed, or just close my eyes silently. I fell asleep listening to his heartbeat, feeling our chests raise and lower in sync.
Calum and I were so in love. Everyone could see it. When family and friends came over for New Years Eve, I showed him off proudly. I just loved him so much. we were always holding hands or cuddling. Every second of the day, I was touching him. Libby, my best friend seemed to be a bit annoyed, and so did Calum's family. They wanted him home again, yet he had stayed for a week longer than he'd planned to.
The Friday after new years, January first, we were walking in the streets, looking in the shop windows. I noticed a tension around the two of us, and when people were looking more and more, Calum dragged me into a shop.
What's going on, Calum? Why is everyone looking at us?" I asked him, starting to become scared.
"Um, I didn't know that this was going to happen right now, babe. Can we please go home?" he asked without looking at me. The shop we went to was coincidentally a bakery, which meant that we had the time to sit down a bit.
"Calum, can't you remember what mum said? She's having a girl's night in, tonight, so we aren't allowed to come home yet," I asked him.
"Shit, yeah, that's right" he remembered, and I grabbed his hand to go sit down.
"We've been out for one out of five hours, and you're already wanting to go home?"I asked him worried.
"What's going on, Calum?" I asked him.
"Uhm, I'm kind of," he started, and I could tell that he was nervous.
"I'm in a band" he finally let out.
"Are you?" I smiled.
"Yeah, and we're kind of good, I guess."
I looked at him, wondering what he was actually telling me. Was he just telling me how good him and his band was.
"Do you listen to music at all?" he asked me, without continuing the meaningless speach.
"Yes, of course I do!" I giggled, probably looking like a question mark. I had no idea what he was doing.
"Have you heard of this band called 5 Seconds Of Summer?" he continued asking, and I thought for a second.
"Yeah, they're the one's with the 'Amnesia' single, right?" I asked and he nodded.
"They're really good!" I assured him, letting him know what I really meant. I liked their songs, but hadn't cared much about them as people.
