Once we decided that they were for sure not coming back, Daryl siphoned some fuel and then we took off again. It was pointless to stay around here, with no food, water, or shelter. We had the tent, but with the herds of walkers shuffling around, we didn't want to take any chances.
I fell asleep while watching the countryside pass by. My head leaned against the window, and the bumps that the truck endured lulled me to sleep. I needed it. Who knew when I would get it again? With just the two of us, we'd always have to be watching each others asses. We had to be careful if we were going to survive.
I felt the truck lurch forward and my eyes shot open. We were in the middle of a small town, and tiny stores lined the street. The sun was sinking in the horizon, and it would be dark soon. I didn't know why the hell we were stopped.
"We need some supplies and we may be able to stay in one of these buildings for the night," Daryl said, as if reading my mind. "There's a clothing store over there," he said, pointing to a small store at the end of the block. "And there's a grocery and a pharmacy there," he said pointing beside us. I nodded.
"I don't have but two bullets left," I told him. His eyebrows knitted together as he though hard as to what I was going to use for protection.
He got out of the truck and walked to the back, rummaging through one of the packs I had grabbed earlier. It was his, I knew, so I wasn't surprised when he pulled a small pistol from within and handed it to me.
"Don't shoot unless it's absolutely necessary. Watch my ass and I'll watch yours. In and out, take what we need and leave, understand?" he asked. I nodded.
He snuck ahead in front of me, his crossbow raised and ready to shoot. I followed behind him quietly as he opened the door of the tiny grocery store and stepped inside.
The store seemed to be empty, so I grabbed a cart, Daryl walking ahead and I throwing anything edible inside. Mostly canned goods, but a few things in boxes as well. We even found a few cases of bottled water. I was surprised to see that the store had not been looted, as I figured it would have been.
We found ourselves in an isle with books lining the shelves. Abandoning the cart, I walked over, peering at the titles in the dim light. One in particular caught my eye. I picked it up and read the back. "We don't have time for this. Let's go," Daryl insisted. I nodded, throwing the book into the cart. I was not surprised to see that Daryl shook his head at me, not understanding why I would want a book.
We exited the store and threw everything into the back of the truck, under a tarp. Next was the pharmacy. Once again, Daryl took the lead while I grabbed a hand basket and scoured the shelves for anything useful. I grabbed a first aid kit, some Neosporin and bandages, ace wraps, anti-itch cream and some aloe.
I heard an arrow release in front of me and looked up to see that Daryl had shot a female walker and was resetting his bow. He pulled the arrow from the walkers head and I winced.
We went back to where the real medicine was located, and I threw as many antibiotics and pain killers as I could into the basket. "I'm finished," I said softly to him. He nodded and let me from the store.
We placed the whole basket in the bed of the truck. "We need some clothes," Daryl said. I nodded.
"I don't have anything not bloodstained or clean," I said.
"We'll go in there, but we need to stay together," Daryl planned.
"We'll cover more ground by ourselves. Besides, I don't think you want to be hanging out in the bra and panty section while I try to find some that suit me," I teased. Daryl rolled his eyes.
"We'll clear the store first, and then I'll consider it," Daryl said.
"Fine with me," I told him.
He led the way down the block to the clothing store. Once again, it wasn't looted, which shocked me to no end. It almost felt wrong, coming in here and taking things when nobody else had, but I got over it quickly. We needed clothes and winter was approaching so we'd need heavier pieces to protect us form the cold.
After checking twice, we concluded that there were no walkers, and we split up. I grabbed everything I could find in my size, not even caring if it wasn't the most flattering piece. When I had grabbed everything I could carry, I went back to the front of the store where Daryl was sitting, an armful of clothes and looking slightly bored.
"What took you so long?" he demanded.
"I wanted to grab something that was actually my size," I said, a bit annoyed. He shook his head, and led me out the door and back down the street. We got back to the truck and placed everything in the back. I shut the tailgate when I felt a strong hand pull my hair.
I yelped in pain and Daryl turned, raising his crossbow and trying to get a clear shot at the walker, which was almost impossible with me in the way. I pulled my pistol from the waistband of my jeans and put it to the walkers head just as it leaned down to bite my neck. I pulled the trigger felt it fall to the ground with a satisfying crunch.
"Are you nuts?" Daryl demanded angrily. "Now every walker in the area will have heard that and we're all screwed!"
"What was I supposed to do, let it tear me to pieces?" I demanded.
"I was about to kill it!" he burst out.
"Oh yeah, I saw how well timed it would've been, since it was about to take a chunk out of me at any moment!" I snapped, stalking past him and getting into the truck, slamming the door behind me.
"I don't know how you could've been so stupid," Daryl muttered under his breath as he got inside the tuck. I took a deep breath and leaned my head against the window. Our time together wasn't going to be easy.
