It didn't take long for Daryl and Lilly to get back. They had found the gate to the campground and had let themselves in. Christopher, or Chris, as he had told me to call me after the awkward silence following our last conversation, wasn't happy that they found a way in. However, there wasn't much he could do. The camp ground was surrounded by woods, and if a walker wanted to get in, one would definitely get in.
"You can have the larger two bedroom cabin there," Chris said, handing me the keys and gesturing towards the cabin next to his. "There's also a loft, so if you decide to sleep alone..."
"I won't be sleeping alone," I said forcefully. I heard a small chuckle from behind me as Daryl disappeared into the cabin carrying bags. Chris glared in Daryl's direction.
"Thank you," I said dryly, then I turned my back to him and went inside the cabin.
Daryl and Lilly were sitting on the couch when I got inside. Lilly looked like she was going to fall asleep and Daryl was sitting there with a beer in his hand. Where the hell he got that, I had no idea.
"We should all get some rest. It's been a long day and we're going to need to be well rested. We're going to need fresh meat, and I'd like to clean up this place before we settle in," I said. Lilly gave a small nod.
"I'll take the loft. There's an air mattress up there and I would like a little privacy," Lilly said, heading up the ladder before I could protest and tell her she could take the second bedroom.
"We have well water and it's heated by gas, so I'm going to take a shower," I said to Daryl. He nodded. He was being calmer then earlier but I was still a bit mad with the way he reacted, so I was keeping my distance for now.
I grabbed a change of clothes and headed into the bathroom. Whoever had been staying here before us must've left in a hurry. Their clothes were lying on the floor and there was still shampoo and soap in the shower.
I undressed quickly and jumped in, letting the warm water fall over me. It felt good to finally take a shower. I hadn't taken one since the CDC and it was nice to finally be clean again. Even if it did feel weird to use someone else's things when they were most likely dead.
There was a knock at the door and I sighed. "Who is it?"
A figure made it's way inside without announcing itself. I peaked my head around the shower curtain. It was Daryl. I quickly withdrew.
"What the hell do you want?" I snapped.
"It doesn't even fucking matter anymore," he spat, stalking out and slamming the door behind him. What, did he expect me not to be pissed off after what happened earlier? He was acting like a fucking child. I wasn't going to put up with that. Especially not now. We needed to be civil with Chris. He had given us a place to stay. As far as I was concerned, Daryl could suck it until he found a way to be nicer to everyone in the group.
I turned off the shower and stepped out, drying myself with a towel that was inside the closet in front of the toilet. I hurried across the tiny hall in between the bathroom and the bedroom, closing the door behind me and changing into some of the new clothes I had gotten a few days prior. I hopped into bed, exhausted, and curled up right in the middle.
It wasn't long before I heard the water running in the bathroom again, signaling that Daryl was in taking a shower. I sighed, turning onto my side and trying to get some sleep. But it was no use. The harder I tried to fall asleep, the harder it was to fall asleep. Finally, I just gave up, laying there but thinking instead of sleeping.
I heard the water shut off and then heard the door to the bedroom open. I snapped my eyes shut, faking sleep. It sounded childish, like when you faked sleep so your parents would carry you in the house after a long car ride in which you 'fell asleep', but I honestly just didn't want him in my bed. Not tonight. I just wanted some time by myself to think things out.
He tapped on my shoulder, trying to wake me so I would scoot out of the center of the bed, but I ignored him. He tapped on my shoulder again, and then huffed when I didn't answer. I heard him stomp out of the room. I expected him to slam the door on the way out so I was surprised when he shut it gently. I gave a sigh of relief.
It wasn't long before I could finally shut my brain down and get some sleep.
It seemed as if I had only gotten an hour of sleep before I was waken up by the early morning light coming through the window. I stretched out. I needed to get up. I had to wash some clothes, clean up the cabin a bit, and try to explore the campground a bit.
I got up, changed my clothes, and headed to the kitchen. I opened the cupboards, finding lots of canned and boxed foods. Nothing was open, to my surprise. I took a cylinder of oat meal out of the cupboard and was about to make it when I heard a knock at the door. I huffed. Who the hell would be knocking on the door at this hour? Even I didn't think Chris would be up this early.
I stomped to the door and threw it open. I was about to say something smart but stopped in my tracks when I saw Lilly standing on the step.
"What the hell are you doing out here so early?" I asked her, slightly worried. "There's nothing and nobody for you to be out here for except-" I trailed off, it finally sinking in. She had been with Chris all night. I wasn't going to judge her though. What she did was her own problem.
"C'mon. We'll get you something to eat and you can go up to bed," I said. She nodded, looking at her feet.
I closed the door behind her as she came inside and turned around, running into Daryl's chest. I took a step back, glaring at him. He glared back with equal force.
"What the hell is going on? It's way too damn early for you both to be up," Daryl snapped.
"It's nothing that concerns you," I snapped at him. His eyes turned dark with anger.
Lilly muttered something inaudible and then scooted around us and up the stairs to the loft before I could protest. Daryl and I stood, staring each other down. I finally turned, going to the kitchen to make something for breakfast. He grabbed my arm and spun me around to face him.
My hands landed on his chest, and he crashed his lips into mine. His hands gripped my waist, and it was all I could do to pull away from him. I pushed him away with my hands, and he looked at me in disbelief.
"I can't do this. Not right now. You've got to earn that privilege back," I told him.
He nodded. I expected him to start throwing things, to yell at least, but he didn't. "I'm sorry," he said, taking me off guard. "I've been an asshole lately and I don't know why."
"Thanks," I said to him. He nodded. "I'm making oat meal. You want some?" I asked him.
"Nah, I'm going out hunting. I'll be back later," he said.
"Stay safe," I told him.
"Always am," he said. I smiled. I was happy to not have to be totally angry with him anymore but I just couldn't forgive him completely. Especially after what he said about Riley.
He left out the front door and I made my way back to the kitchen. I could tell it was going to be a long day.
