Prologue
VOILET POV
I looked at the notice again, my eyes blurry with tears. What will I do? I thought in despair. I glanced at the door and saw my friend entering the bakery.
"Hey violet!" Izzy said, a smile stretched on her face.
"They are closing my bakery! Even though I tried so hard but I just can't keep up with ever increasing taxes!" I said as a tear slided down her cheek.
"OH! But you did pay all the dues..." Izzy started but I interrupted, my voice quivery.
"I cannot afford to lose the bakery! It has been with my family for two generations now. My grandmother opened it and how well it did in her and my mother's time...and now due to it being in the center of the city, the rents have tripled and it does not matter how hard I work, I just cannot pay all the rents and taxes. I have already taken loan!" I wailed and finally pushed the notice letter away.
"You are better than your mother and grandmother! I know you can make through this tough time! You know Ashley, my old high school buddy, her chef who makes all the deserts is not available for this weekend so if you want I can ask her to hire you. That gig can help you because this weekend she's catering the Oscars after party and they pay big bucks!!" Izzy said her voice comfortable like chirping of birds from the park nearby.
"Thank you but I know Ashley would not hire me! This is a big deal for her and she can hire anyone to be honest. I have never catered so I am totally inexperienced!" I cried facing the reality and being the pessimist who I have always been.
"Let me talk to her! She knows you are a fabulous cook! I am sure she won't say no." Izzy said in a hopeful voice and I gave her a smile despite all the worries.
I looked at the display counters that were filled with muffins, breads and other daily breakfast eatables. It had been three days since I got the notice. I had two weeks to leave or pay half of the taxes and other stuff. Izzy did not call either and I knew that she I am all by my own. I just wanted my mother right now but it was impossible since she passed away couple of years back due to cancer. I never felt this sad, hopeless and scared since my mother's death. I did not know how I was going to repay all the loans. I looked through all the orders and was done with more than half of them. I had two birthday cakes to bake so I got busy with my work. When I was done baking, I placed the cakes on the cake stands and served the customers. Madeline, my helper and assistant was absent because she was out of town to attend her friend's wedding and she was supposed to return today. I was serving coffee to my customer when I saw Izzy storming in the shop.
"HEEY!!! You got the GIG! You have two days to prepare for five hundred people!" Izzy said breathlessly.
" WAIT, WHAT?" I said in disbelief.
"Ashley hired two chefs before I could talk to her about you but one of them left due to some personal issues so she called me to ask you to help her. Now hurry!! You have only TWO days!" Izzy said as a smile stretched across her face.
"Thank you thank you thank you!!!" I squealed with happiness and hugged Izzy. Still in state of shock I rushed to the kitchen and started drafting a mental plan for the event.
" But Madeline isn't here yet and I cant cook for 500 people in two days!" I said as reality hit me.
"NO! You wont go all depressed again! I will help you and Madeline will be on her way as well!" Izzy said as she rushed to get the apron. I smiled unable to hide my happiness. I can already see myself successfully scheduling the entire plan for baking the dishes in given time.
