Chapter 1

Violet’s POV

My heart hammered in my chest as I searched for an answer. This is ridiculous, completely absurd! I thought as I was in juxtaposition, one thought contrary to another.

“So, what is your answer?” Alistair asked in unprecedented annoyed voice, my feelings full of disdain for him. My feelings had definitely changed for him through the discourse of entire journey. He was attractive as hell but that “I don’t give a shit” look made him look like a complete dunce. My bakery is most important thing in life but I never thought I will marry someone else other than the person I would love. I knew my answer just then.

“No…” I retorted, my eyes meeting his. This is my life and he just cannot control anyone this way. His bluish green eyes stared back at me, hauntingly.

“Okay… and just don’t tell this whole deal thing to any one”,he said, exasperated, then reached his pocket and pulled out a card “ but in case you change your mind, just call me.”

I immediately stepped out of the car, my eyes filled with tears. I had no idea why I felt like crying. Was I relieved that it was all over or was I mad at myself for not thinking enough before answering.  The car sped away as I headed towards my apartment. I needed to talk to Izzy, I decided. I will tell regardless of what Mr. Alistair Scott says. Before I could reach the final step to my apartment, I saw Izzy rushing towards me.

“WHAT WAS THAT???” she asked, I was sure this news must be on TV already. I just rushed to Izzy and hugged her.

“We need to talk!” I said my voice heavy.  I needed her discretion. I went inside and tore the card in to two halves and tossed them over the coffee table. GOD! How can he make a drama out of my life! I wondered out loud.

“Okay.” She said as she also moved with me inside. I made both of us some hot cocoa which actually helped me relax.

“So, what happened?” Izzy asked her eyes full with concern.  My room was emblazoned with the pictures of my parents and couple of them was of Izzy’s. Izzy has always been more than a friend, always so loving and caring. I poured her in with all the details and all the time Izzy looked at me astonished.

“Why did you say NO?” Izzy said the first thing after recovering from the initial shock of knowing the whole truth.

“What do you mean WHY? I just cannot marry a random stranger. Beside I will try to figure out some other way to save bakery.” I said, defensively.

“And how on Earth you would do that??” Izzy questioned further and I just looked away, knowing I had no answer.

“I just can’t!...he is so….good looking but he sounded so annoyed whenever he looked at me and I don’t know how I would be able to deal with him for six freaking months! And he just made me headlines of news…I mean seriously who on the Earth gave him this right!” I exclaimed in my quivering voice.

“See, he was just confused. He assumed Ashley told you everything and you agreed with this whole thing. I don’t think this way he is at fault. I mean you should blame Ashley for this, not him.” Izzy started to reason with me.

“Why are you defending him?” I asked annoyed and being oh so juvenile and a smile formed on Izzy’s face.

“Just go to bed and this will help you clear off your head.”  Izzy said finally standing up and heading towards door.  I nodded as I felt so tired suddenly. I hugged Izzy good bye and rushed to take a warm bath.  All the time my brain played questions like it is only for six months, what don’t you just call and say yes? I kept on thinking how I will never have to worry about the bakery if I just say yes.  Ughhhh…I won’t give him the satisfaction of yes! I decided but knowing the truth that I was the only one getting hurt. If I say no, he will still have some other girl but I won’t have another volunteer to save my bakery.

I, mad at myself for thinking so much, slept under the covers of my bed and closed my eyes. Suddenly I heard my cell phone vibrating.

“Hello?” I asked, my voice sounding tired.

“I am soo sorryyy for everything. I just did not know what to do. I didn’t have guts to come up to you and ask such a big thing.  I am so sorry...but please, please say yes to him. My whole career is at stake. I get gigs mostly because of him and I owe him a lot. Violet, you are a nice human please, just help me out this time. Please…” I heard Ashley crying on the other end of line.

I was so mad at her before her call but hearing her cry broke my heart.

“I will see…” I replied in a broken voice and turned off the phone.  I closed my eyes, tossed and  turned for couple of hours when I finally went to sleep.
