(Lucy's POV)
"Today is the big day." I glance up at my least favorite scientist through the bars of my cage as the words slide from his mouth with fake excitement. I hate him, Zayn Highmore, but to me he's Mr. Highmore. Zayn is the head scientist and manager of the Indigo Project. He gives me an evil smile and leaves. Why? Why does he have to be so fascinated with me? Why, out of all the experiments in the Indigo Project, did he have to choose me to be his favorite toy?
My name is Lucy Heartfilia (see picture, second from top),but all the scientists call me experiment 1, that is, when they're not calling me brat, freak ,or any other insult. I was the first experiment to be accepted into the Indigo Project, when I was just a baby. Most of us were orphans, including me, with the exception of one person who was just taken. He was ripped from his family "in the name of science". All of us were no older than nine or ten when we were brought here and we're all the same age. All together there's only 4 of us, but according to Zayn, today was the day they would bring another in.
There used to be more. A lot more, actually. However, in the beginning, the scientists were still figuring out what worked and what was fatal. Sadly, the other experiments all died, one by one. We were the only ones who didn't die from negative reactions, just the four of us.
The screaming breaks my train of thought. "Let go of me!" It sounds like a little girl.."Come on brat, your cage is just up ahead." My eyes widen as they round the corner. It is a little girl (see picture, lowest), she's looks a little younger than my friend was when they brought him here. "Please," she's starting to cry now, "I just want to go home". Home? Oh no, she must have been taken. The man dragging her to her cage loses his patience and picks her up, throwing her over his shoulder. "Shut up, will you!" he growls at her. He keeps walking then stops at my cage. "Looks like you're getting a roommate."
Well that might be nice. I could help her get used to this place as a roommate, though it is more like a cage-mate.
He opens the door to my cage and throws the poor girl in. After he decides his job is done he walks away leaving us alone. She stopped crying now and I scoot a little closer, wanting to befriend her. Having friends is very important here, without them we would probably all go crazy. I think the scientists know that too because our cages are close to each other, and they let us out of our cages to interact for ten to twenty minutes every other day.
The girl wakes me from my trance when she mumbles something, "What is this place?" "It's called Lab 551, but it's more commonly known as The Indigo Project. Except, this whole lab is a secret that only a few people know about, not even the government. What they do here is kind of illegal and extremely technologically advanced." I respond hoping to start a conversation. "Why are we here?" she says sadly. I know this answer will be hard.
What do I say? We're all genetically modified experiments and soon you'll be one too if you respond well to the injections? Oh and in their eyes your just a toy for them to pump whatever they want into just to see how you'll react.
"Well, they brought us here to genetically change us to have like superpowers or magic. Then they teach and train us to use them," I slowly say, carefully choosing my words to tell her, without really telling her, what they do to us here. She would start crying again if I told her everything. I don't really know what they want to accomplish by doing this to us or what happens when they're done, but it can't be good. "Don't worry, everything will be fine." She looks up at me and asks another question, "What's your name?" Thank goodness this is an easy one. "My name is Lucy," I say smiling. My smile makes her grin as she says,"My name is Wendy." "Well, Wendy you don't need to worry. I'll protect you," I say. She smiles at that and yawns. Then she slides down to the floor and falls asleep.
'Nice job, Luce.' Argh. All of the experiments are somehow mentally connected, so we can talk to each other in each other's heads. I think it's something in the genes they put in each of us that's the same that connects us and lets us do it. We decided to keep it our little secret and not let the scientists know. The problem is sometimes we accidentally scare each other when someone decides to just jump into someone else's head.
'Natsu, you scared me!' I complained to my pink headed best friend (see picture, top). 'Natsu, don't scare Lucy!' my other friend Erza yelled at him (see picture, fourth from top). 'Wow Natsu, you managed to get two girls mad at you with just three words!' my other friend Gray laughed at him (see picture, middle). 'Shut up popsicle, I didn't mean to,' he yelled back, 'anyway, how much did you tell her?' 'Not a lot,' I answered, 'she's too young and scared to know too much. Tomorrow we'll see each other and we can tell her a little more.' 'How is she?' Erza questioned. 'She's sleeping now, but not great. She's fine, at least I got her to stop crying,' I replied, 'she was taken....' There was complete silence.
'No, she's too young to be taken. What would possess them to take a child from their family?,' Natsu says sadly. Natsu is the only other one who was taken. He was ten and I think Wendy is about that age. Erza was four when she was brought here and Gray was six. 'We all know how this works guys. It's nothing new." Gray comments, 'It's only a matter of time until-' 'Don't even say it.' Natsu threatens, 'We all know what happens here, how many people have died, how much we all want out, and how horrible some of the people here are. We don't need you to repeat it for us.' ' I think you just did flame brain.' Gray says shortly. 'The poor girl,' Erza says. 'Her name is Wendy,' I say, trying to lighten the mood, 'She's strong. I'm sure she can take it.' Silence. 'I hope you're right.' Natsu says quietly. I can almost see his sad eyes. I swear there's a whole other universe in them; they're just that deep. 'I wonder what they'll try to make her,' Gray wondered out loud.
Over the years, they have made five different types of genetically modified people. There are Dragons or Dragon experiments. Natsu is one of those. He's a Fire Dragon experiment. Then there are Elementals or Elemental experiments. Gray is an Elemental. They originally tried to make him a Dragon, but he responded differently to the injections and became the only Ice Elemental. Then you have the Requips or Requip experiments. Erza is a Requip. They haven't found a way to copy the genes in any of us to create others yet.
There are also Exceeds or Exceed experiments. One day they brought in three cats and genetically modified them to speak and act almost human. I've also heard they're trying to give them wings and they might grab a Scrap to try it on too. A Scrap or Scrap experiment is someone who they try pretty much everything on. Sometimes they try to make another type of experiment with them, try things on them first before they try it on one of their already established experiments, try things on them and with another type to compare, or sometimes they take little pieces of different genes from other types and place them inside of them. Most Scraps react badly to injections and die.
I am a Scrap, but I am special, apparently. All the scientists go on and on about how special I am, but I don't know why. I mean, I guess I should have died by now or its crazy that I've never had a negative reaction, but that can't be it. They think that I'm a different type now, but they're still going to treat me like a scrap to "further my genetic growth".
So far, I have Natsu's hearing, Gray's ability to withstand freezing temperatures, a little girl who died from a negative reaction's quick thinking and strategically stronger mind, the genetics to withstand blazing hot temperatures from who knows where, the ability to see small glimpses of the future from one of those Exceeds, and other things inside me that they say I haven't even activated yet.
I hope Wendy doesn't become a Scrap. I'm the only Scrap who hasn't died yet and I think I'm more lucky than special. I don't want Wendy to become one just to die. I really do want to know what she's going to be. Sadly I can't really control my abilities; they're training me everyday to control them, but as you could guess they're not very nice about it. Oh well, I guess I'll find out later. "Goodnight, Wendy," I whisper. Soon I fall asleep and start dreaming of a life outside these walls, free. A life where we're not just experiments.-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—
I know it's really short, but it is my first time writing a fan fiction so please give only helpful criticism. I hope you liked it and if not tell me why so I can improve it. This story started as just a crazy dream I had of a lot of different fan fictions I've read combined into one story and I just typed down a few thoughts. I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading!! :)
