NaLu: Just Experiments

CHAPTER 12: Dr. Crimson

(Wendy's POV)

     I walk down the halls after first period with Mira and Romeo. We make small talk about school and favorite teachers, but when they start talking about how hard one of our tests was I have to just nod my head and give the occasional 'hmmm'.
I see Lucy and Natsu up ahead and I wave. They walk over and Natsu immediately starts talking, "You should have been there guys. Lucy got into a debate with a teacher and she won!" Lucy blushes, "Well he was wrong. He thought sea horses could only have 100 kids, but really they have 200-250." I laugh, "That sounds like a very interesting debate."
"Well, we should probably get to our next class." I say grabbing Lucy's arm. Lucy and I are paired up for our next class. "Fine." Natsu pouts, "I need to get going anyway." "Oh I'm so sorry I had to break you two lovebirds up." I tease. "WHAT?!" Lucy and Natsu shout in unison, making them blush. "Nothing, nothing." I giggle.
After a few more awkward seconds, Lucy and I head to class. "We aren't going to make it in time." Lucy says frowning at her watch. "Yes we will." I tell her, confidently grabbing her hand and speed running to class. We make with time to spare. "Besides," I add, "I was running too fast for anyone to see us." She smiles at me and is still holding my hand when we enter the classroom.
     We sit in our usual spot at the back and class begins. "Hello class. I will be your substitute today. I do not know where your teacher is so do not ask. My name Dr. Crimson." Something in my stomach feels twisted. I feel an urge coming from my chest telling me to run.
'You feel it too.' Lucy says in my head, 'It's our instinct. The scientists designed the genes they put in us, but they had holes in the genetic code. They used animal genes to fill in the gaps, with you they used a cheetah which is why you're so fast. In result, we have animal instincts, but mixed with our others powers it turns into a sixth sense.'
I feel a very strong feeling start to swell through my body. Run, it tells me, that man is evil. 'Something about that guy makes me feel uneasy.' I tell Lucy, 'We need to leave.' 'Just wait,' she says, 'if we leave, he would do something serious. It might trigger him to do what he came for a little faster. We need him to make the first move.' 'Okay,' I say, still uneasy, 'but if he does anything, I'm not going to hesitate to use my powers.' 'Good.' she says.
The class felt excruciatingly longer than usual. We acted normal. Let him play his game. We are just going to wait until he comes to us. Inevitably, the class ended. I get up with Lucy right behind me and walk towards the door. "Excuse me." a raspy voice says, "Can I talk to you two girls for a second?" I freeze, petrified. It takes every ounce of my self-control to turn around, smile, and say, "Okay, but you might have to give us a pass to our next class so we aren't late."
"I've been substituting at this school for a very long time. I recognize the face of a new student when I see it. So where'd you come from?" he asks casually. "It's a really long story actually." Lucy says, "We were kidnapped from an orphanage and once the man was caught, we started being fostered by some friends." "Oh, how interesting." he says, "I can't imagine what it must have been like for you. Were you two the only ones?"
"No. We were with others." I say. He looks at us, "I hope the transition to this school wasn't too hard for you. Well, one day I would like to meet all five of you, face to face." Lucy nods slowly and quickly kicks him in the jaw.  He stumbles backwards and she punches him in the face, twice. He falls to the floor unconscious. "Why did you do that?" I ask, shocked. "We never told him how many of us there were. You said there were others, but he said 'all five of you'. He knows who we are. Get Natsu, Gray, and Erza to come here." Lucy says quickly, checking the man's suit for information.
After a quick talk in our heads, they were on their way. Lucy found an Indigo Project ID in his suit that said 'Dr. James Crimson, ECA.' "ECA stands for Experiment Control Agent. If he's here, it means they're looking for us. It also means they haven't found us yet. I'm going to erase his memory far back enough so he doesn't remember ever seeing us. Then I can play with a few things and make him think nothing's here and he should go back to headquarters. Tell Mr. Highmore he didn't find his precious experiments." Lucy tells me. "You can do that?" I ask. "It will take the next two quarters, but yeah." she says.
Suddenly the door flies open and Natsu runs in and yells, "Where is he?!" "I think Lucy and Wendy took care of it." Erza says. Gray just laughs at Natsu until he punches him. After a quick explanation, we all just stand in a circle, talking about what to do. "When Lucy erases his memory, what do we do with him?" Natsu asks. "We could take him to the nurse and say he fainted." Erza suggests. "Yeah, we should just do that." Gray says, "We might need to work up a lie though."
"Lucy and I had a question about the lesson and while he explained we noticed he looked dehydrated. Then he just fainted." I say, making up a quick story. "Not bad." Gray says.
"Well, I guess I should get started." Lucy says kneeling over Dr. Crimson. It's not like we could help her, but we couldn't leave either. We all just sat there, making small talk and watching Lucy. We do this for about 30 minutes.
It isn't long before Natsu and Gray get into a fight. Erza tries to stop them, but they refuse to be stopped. "Guys," I whine, "all your fighting is making my head hurt." "Stop making her head hurt ice princess." Natsu says. "No, you stop making her head hurt ash for brains." Gray says back. The fight continues.
I look back to Lucy and tense up. The man's hand is holding a gun. It has a weird purple pill in it. I watch in horror as he gets up and puts the gun to Lucy's neck. He pulls the trigger. "Noooooo!!" I scream running towards the scene. He loads his gun again, jumps on me, and shoots me in the neck.
     I fell to the floor, listening to people call my name. I'm not dying, but I feel funny. This can't be good. I watch helpless as, one by one, each of my friends fall to the floor. The door opens and I see all our friends walk in horrified. Out of the corner of my eye, Dr. Crimson jumps out the window.
     Somebody leans down to me, Romeo, and asks, "What happened?" I can't bring myself to lie anymore. I know I won't be conscious much longer and I weakly say, "The Indigo Project. They found us......"
