NaLu: Just Experiments

CHAPTER 5: We Will Be Free

(Natsu's POV)

     "She's been in there too long." I say, pacing back and forth in my cage. It is really small so I can only go four or five steps before I have to turn around again. It's been just under two hours since Lucy was taken into the injection room. That's too long. "I know." Wendy comments, "I hope she's alright." She looks so lonely in that cage without Lucy there. "We can only hope she's okay." Erza says sadly.
Suddenly, a scientist bursts through the door with Lucy strapped to a metal table, unconscious. "Lucy!!!" we all shout in unison. We watch as the scientist opens Lucy's cage, unstraps Lucy, and throws her in with Wendy breaking her fall. We wait until the scientist leaves to start talking again.
"Well, this is a little better, I guess." Gray mutters. "At least we can see her now." Erza says, "How is she Wendy?" "She's alright. She just passed out, from pain no doubt." She responds. Pain. I don't like that word. I especially don't like it when it's used in the same sentence as Lucy. She shouldn't be in pain. The thought of Lucy in pain makes me want to punch something, so I do.
The closest object was the bars of my cage. "Ooooooooowwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!" I whine, "That hurt!" "What did you expect, flame brain?" Gray laughs. "Try to control yourself Natsu." Erza strictly tells me. ".....Natsu........."
"Lucy!!! You're awake!!!" I yell. I watch as she slowly leans up and looks at me, smiling that same, beautiful smile. "Did you go and hurt yourself again, Natsu?" she asks jokingly.
"No." I pout, " I'm just so happy you're up. I was so worried and I couldn't talk to you. You just, sounded so scared and-" I stop quickly as soon as I notice everyone around me. Wendy turned bright red, Erza is trying not to laugh, and Gray is...........making a heart sign?
     I think Lucy noticed too because there is a light pink over her cheeks and she's smiling to herself. She snaps out of it though and looks to me. "We need to talk." She says. "Right, I want to know what happened to you." I reply. Her eyes wink at me and she says, "I was knocked out for most of it. I don't really know much more than you do." While she says this her eyes are dancing and I know she wants us to continue this conversation in the privacy of our minds.
'Okay, I actually heard a thing or two so now we have a lot to talk about.' Lucy tells us. We all nod, telling her to continue. 'First: What is our purpose?' she asks. 'We are genetically modified humans that are tested, trained, and added to in order to further our genetic growth.' Erza says, quoting what the scientists tell us. 'No, that's what we are. I want to know what our purpose is.' Lucy challenges, 'what is the goal? Why even make genetically modified humans? What's the real reason they're hiding from us?' 'How do you know they're hiding a real reason from us?' Gray asks. 'Do you think Zayn would create a group of super humans then walk away? He has a plan. I know it.' Lucy says.
     'Okay, on to number two: I heard a scientist tell Zayn not to be late for his meeting with a potential buyer.' She says while biting her lip. She's so cute when she bites her lip like that. 'What I don't understand is what he's selling.' Erza comments. 'That's why I brought this up. What could Zayn be selling that's important enough to have a meeting about it?' Lucy looks around hoping for an idea. 'Do you think he's selling The Indigo Project?' I ask. 'Who would he sell it to and why?' Wendy speaks up, 'I thought you said this was his life's work, and a big secret. If only a few people know about it, what are the odds one of them would have enough money to buy The Indigo Project?' That's a good point.
'Well, number three, I guess: Zayn...well...he kinda sorta said...um he would get a kiss....from me.' Lucy stutters. WHAT!!! 'And much more..whatever that means.' she muttered quietly. WHAT!!!!! 'IF HE SO MUCH AS TOUCHES YOU, I'LL-' I'm cut off quickly by Gray. 'Stop throwing a fit Natsu! You'll attract the guards and they'll get suspicious!' he says quickly. 'Um, he also said to spare no expense and that I was too important to die.' Lucy finishes. 'Lucy, you said that's what he uses Scraps for, you know, to die.' Wendy says quietly. 'That's right Wendy, that's why it's strange for him to say that.' I tell her.
     'Well, that's pretty much all I heard, but we still have one more thing to talk about.' Lucy says, 'We have many questions and little to no answers. So, I'm thinking, we should get some.' 'How?' I ask, curious, 'They won't let us waltz out of our cages and look around.' 'Yes, but they said it themselves. We are special, modified, and powerful. With just the right push, we could get all the answers we want and more. Then....we could break out.' Lucy says, looking at us.
     'Break out? Really Lucy?!?' Wendy asks excitedly, jumping up and down. 'Really.' Lucy giggles at her, 'I've got a plan, too.' 'Let's hear it.' Erza says hopefully. 'Okay, here it is. Every time we get new abilities, we hide one of them. We hide the most useful one they give us and show them all the others. Eventually, when we have enough hidden abilities, we can surprise them. They won't know what to do because they won't know our abilities or weaknesses. Our main goal is to contain the guards and scientists (if we could knock them out that would be great), find a way to get all the answers we need, and break out.' Lucy finishes. This might just work. We might actually get out of this mess.
     'Who's with me?' she asks. I'm the first one to speak up, 'Let's do it.' Wendy is next, 'I'm in!' After her is Erza, 'I can't believe, after all these years, we might get out.' Gray is is last, 'I'm in too.' 'Great!' Lucy jumps happily.

                                -Tomorrow-

     'I can't believe you all said yes.' Lucy says. 'C'mon Lucy, it's the fist plan to break out in the history of The Indigo Project, and it's a pretty good one.' I encourage her, 'How could we not agree?'
     It's true. Every single one of us joined without a second thought. We all want out, desperately.
     Lucy found out what abilities she got today. She can fly, become invisible, and they upgraded her hearing again. She decided to hide the ability to become invisible and we convinced her to hide the ability to fly too.  Soon we'll all go through more modifications and hide more abilities, and eventually, when we have enough, we will break out.
     We will live for the first time, breathe fresh air for the first time in forever, be free, and run wild. For those who were taken like me and Wendy, we will see our family again. We will laugh and live and hope and love and for the first time ever, not feel like just experiments.
     We will be free.
