CHAPTER 4: Too Many Questions

(Lucy's POV)

I look back at Natsu as Zayn drags me to the evaluation section of the lab. I can't go now. I promised Wendy she could talk to me as soon as she was half way through, and I know I can't talk to her while I'm being evaluated. Natsu says one more thing to me in my head before I go, 'I'll talk to Wendy for you.' I give him a grateful smile and let Zayn drag me away.
We round the corner and he looks at me. "C'mon my little pet. There's so much to do." "I can walk on my own." I say trying to yank my arm out of his grip. "What's the fun in that?" He says tightening his grip, "However, I'll let go for a kiss on the cheek." Even I wasn't expecting this. He was foul. "Never!" I yelled. He just shrugged, "Never is a very long time, and I will get that kiss......and much more." He adds with an abnormally wide smirk. What's that supposed to mean?
"Here, we are." he says as we approach the door to the evaluation room. "What are you putting in me this time?" I say with anger in my voice. "Just a few different genes. We have so much to try on you. We really should evaluate you more often." He says. How disgusting.
I have to shield my eyes as we enter the room. Like almost all the rooms in the lab, everything is white or metal. Even the clothes they give us are white, fitted, and very plain with our experiment number on they front to the left. The lights are everywhere, leaving no shadows, no where to hide.
"Bring her here." Another scientist says. "Here you go." Zayn says, throwing me at him. The scientist barely catches me and throws me onto a cold metal table. I groan as my back hits the table and they start to strap me down. "Should we sedate her?"
"Yes, I want you to spare no expense on her, she's too important to die." He mumbled that last part, but he must have forgotten I have Natsu's hearing. Why would he want me alive? I mean, he wants all the experiments alive, but I've never heard him say 'spare no expense' for an experiment.
Wait. Zayn says I'm his favorite toy. All the scientists say I'm special. Zayn said he would get a kiss and much more. Now he's saying spare no expense. What's going on here?
As if Zayn can tell I'm getting suspicious, he doesn't give me any time to pursue my thoughts and sedates me. Soon the world turns dark and I start thinking. Why are we here and what do they hope to accomplish? Let's say they do create genetically modified humans, then what? I know Zayn won't let a bunch of super humans just sit around. He must have some sort of use for us, but what?
Oh no, I can feel them moving me. I'm waking up. Where am I now? I'm still on a table, but this one has wheels. Zayn and another scientist are rolling me along different halls. I know this path....it leads to the injection room. It's close to my cage though. I can probably talk to Natsu now that I'm not being evaluated.
'Natsu?' I ask. 'Natsu?!' I can hear fear starting to creep into my voice. I'm scared. I want to know more than ever why Zayn wants us and especially why he likes me so much. 'Natsu!!' 'Lucy?!?' 'Natsu I'm so glad to hear you, but I don't have much time.' I say relieved but still stressed. 'What? Why? Where are they taking you?' he asked worriedly. 'I don't know why, but they're taking me to the injection lab. I don't know what their plans are, how long it'll take, why they're doing it, or why Zayn is wearing a wider smirk than usual. You need to take care of Wendy. I'll be back soon.'
'Wait, Lucy!?!?! Lucy!!!! Lu-' I lose him as soon as we enter through the doors to the injection lab. I can feel the world going dark again. They must be sedating me again. Oh well, I could use the time to think about all I've learned.
It's impossible to tell how much time has passed when you're knocked out. In my last evaluation, I thought twenty minutes had passed, but my friends said it had been a little more than a day. I never liked being unconscious. It makes me feel helpless, vulnerable, and alone.
I feel an all too familiar pain start at my chest and swell to every part of my body. This can't be right, this pain only happens if you're in an injection tube. In evaluations, usually the new genes are small changes with small amounts of pain that they can inject in a shot to your neck. Sometimes though, if the new genes will cause major changes with major pain, they will place you in an injection tube. I must be in one, but what's the major change?
What are they putting in me?!? I scream as my back starts burning with an invisible fire. I've never felt this much pain. My hands are shaking and my back is going numb. I scream again and my head starts spinning like a top. The pain is relentless and I know I won't last much longer.
As if they could read my mind, the pain slows and dies off. I feel the tubes untangling themselves from around my body. I fall to the ground as the door to the tube opens and Zayn smiles down at me, "Good, you accepted the genes." "Sir, you have to get to your meeting with the potential buyer." the other scientist reminds him. "If only I could bring my toy. Oh well, one day I will be able to." he responds.
I can't give him a sarcastic response because the world is going dark again. Wait a second, did he say one day he would be able to? And did the other guy say 'potential buyer'? Is Zayn selling the Indigo Project?
I still have too many questions and not enough answers. What does Zayn want with us in the end? Why is he so fascinated with me? Is Wendy okay? Did she survive the Dragon genes? Who is the potential buyer? What is he buying? What did Zayn put in me? Why does he keep smirking?
That smirk is the last thing I see as the world goes dark. I have too many questions, and I need to find some answers. They need to tell us who we are, why they need us, and what the point of all this even is. There's too many questions that we've been okay with not knowing the answer, but not now. I want all the answers.
