CHAPTER 16: I Hope You're Ready

(Lucy's POV)

     There's guards everywhere. All of my friends are on their knees in rows with all the other students. The teachers have been corralled together and are being surrounded by guards who are forcing them to drink something, to erase their memory probably. Once they drink it they look confused and are led out the back door. Until, there are no more teachers. There's just the students, the experiments, the guards, the scientists, and Zayn.
     I lock eyes with Levy and I can tell she's scared. I am too as a guard handcuffs my hands behind my back and a scientist rushes forward to do a small evaluation to make sure I'm alright, with the guard's hand never leaving my shoulder. When she is done, another guard comes to hold me, one on each side, and they lead me to Zayn.
     "Did you miss me, my pet?" he asks. He puts his finger under my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes. "I'm not your pet!" I almost scream at him. "Actually, you are. You were mine from the beginning." he grins, "I was just kind enough to expand The Indigo Project to benefit others." My confusion must be obvious because he motions for the guards to bring the other experiments to him and they force us to sit down.
"Listen closely children because I'm about to give you all the answers you've so desperately been trying to find." he says like a school teacher. I look at Natsu and he asks, 'So have you figured out how we are going to escape yet?' I smile. He knows me too well. Since the moment I was handcuffed my mind was thinking through all the ways to escape. 'So far I have an idea, but I need to think it through a bit more.' I tell him.
      It looks like I will have all the time I need because Zayn has started to tell us a story. "My father, Ronald Highmore, created The Indigo Project when he was faced with a difficult choice." he begins, "He needed to find me a wife that was perfect, beautiful, and smart. He looked very hard, but soon realized that no girls he could find were acceptable. Eventually, he decided to use his money to make a girl for me."
     "Honestly I was so happy when he shared the idea with me that I insisted I help him choose the lucky girl to be modified." he smiles and looks straight at me, "I'm sure by now you've come to understand that I chose you, Lucy. Propositum Uxorem or "wife project" in Latin was the code name so you would never know until you were ready. I was very pleased with the idea of making my own wife, and yet I wanted something more. When my father died and gave everything to me, I finally decided what I would do. Why should I be the only one to benefit from The Indigo Project?"
     "I quickly expanded it and started telling a few people about my new factory. I took it slow, making sure I didn't set my pace too fast, and created different stages for my new business. Stage One: Propositum Uxorem, check. That one was easy. Stage Two: Obtaining new experiments, check. I just grabbed a few orphans and two other kids who weren't orphans. Stage Three: Create website and collect orders, check. In fact, most of you have been bought already. Stage Four: Lab, Experiment, and customer expansion, in progress." he says, glancing at all the students on their knees. "They should be acceptable. We already expanded the lab, and now I have new experiments, but I still need to find a way to reach more potential buyers...oh well."
     Zayn looks back to us and smiles, "Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you! I almost want to thank you. You led me to my new experiments and saved me a lot of time. Now all that's left to do is grab our Exceeds, load all of you up into our trucks, and send you on your way. Soon you will all be back in your cages where you belong. I hope you're ready." He walks away, talking with another scientist. I glance at Wendy and see the pure fear that has gripped her entire body. 'Don't worry.' I say to her, 'I think I have a plan.'
     Ezra looks up hopefully, 'Really?' Nastu and Gray look up too. 'Yeah, I think so.' I confirm, 'While he was talking, I looked inside the guard's mind and found a weakness with the cuffs. Each set of handcuffs has been specially designed to be invincible for one of our powers. Nastu's fire won't melt the metal on his cuffs, but if he were to try it on mine....'
     Their faces light up, starting to see where I'm going with this. 'Wendy, don't move okay?' I tell her. She nods and I slowly shift my weight so my hands face hers. Carefully, I create a tiny pebble of light and it floats over to her cuffs and starts to melt them. Nastu is melting Erza's and Gray is freezing Natsu's. One by one, the cuffs crack, a sound too small for the guards to hear, and Erza breaks mine.
     We keep our hands behind our backs and hold the cuffs in place like nothing has happened, but a secret smile forms on our lips. Wendy creates small invisible bubbles around each of the guards, scientists, and Zayn. She calls it an air lock. They won't be going anywhere for at least five minutes. That's plenty of time.
     When she gives the single, we run. Her eyes are closed in deep concentration, and I can't help but smile at how much she has grown since the day she was thrown into that cage with me. I don't have much time to daydream though because her eyes shoot open and she nods to us. That's the signal. I throw off my cuffs and turn invisible immediately, Wendy takes off running with Erza holding her hand, Gray walks up to the ceiling, and Natsu holds my hand, turning invisible too.
I didn't know I could do this until yesterday. We were playing Hide and Fight, and I was invisible, but Erza bumped into me and turned invisible too when she made direct contact. I can only do it for one person though. Still holding Natsu's hand, I fly up to the ceiling with Gray and land on one of the rafters. That's when the yelling starts.
Zayn is practically having a temper tantrum while all the guards and scientists scurry around, hoping to find us again. 'Okay, now we have to rescue the rest of the kids.' I say. Fairytail Academy is a small school. It's so small that all the grades, from Kindergarten to Seniors, all fit in one campus. The guards have rounded up all the grades, and it makes me sad when a notice a small Kindergartener starts to cry. We are in the giant double gym. It has two basketball courts on it, but all the students still have to squeeze to fit where the guards want them.
     "Don't worry. I'm going to save you." I whisper quietly. I refuse to be put in a cage ever again, not me, not my friends, not those kids, No One! I'm done with cages, handcuffs, feeding tubes, evaluations, injections, the lab, the stuffy air, the horrible clothes, and anything else that has been stamped with the label The Indigo Project.
     Now I have friends. Now I have family. Now I have hope. Now I have freedom. Now I have strength. Now I have....love. And I won't let anyone take any of that away from me.
     I jump from the rafters and fly in the air, forming giant balls of light in my hands. "Zayn!" I scream, "I hope you're ready for this because your pet just decided she's tired of her cage!" I raise up my hand and launch the ball of light, aiming straight at the man who caged me for sixteen years. He should be scared because my spirit just broke free.
