Chapter Thirty-Nine - Bringing In The New Year

Hunter's Point of View

(ending #3 because it was commented the most on chapter thirty.)

My Christmas had been fairly eventful, besides what was going on with my parents. My mom never failed to make Christmas special. We still made chocolate chip cookies for "Santa" and placed them on the table in the living room with a glass of milk beside it. I knew Santa was not real, but it warmed my heart to see my little brother in a happy state—something I had not been in for a while now. That was until she came along and changed my perspective on things, changed the way I saw people and life in general. She was the one who made me happy.

"Babe, how about we put the banner over here above the fireplace?" Eliza smiled at me, holding the banner in her hands that said, 'Happy Birthday, Hunter'.

"Yeah, that'll look good." I smiled back at her. I walked over to where she was standing and softly removed the banner from her hands, the banner fell to the floor. I held her hands in my larger ones and looked her deeply in the eyes. "You know you didn't have to do all this for me, babe. I would have been perfectly fine if I got to spend my birthday with you."

"You're such a sweetheart." She removed one of her hands from mine to poke my nose. "You deserve this party."

"But remember what happened last time you threw a big party." I mumbled, my eyes flickering to the floor. "I just don't want that to happen again."

"Baby, look at me." She brought her hand up to my chin and turned my head towards her. "I know what happened that night was crazy, but you helped me. You were there for me and I love you for that. I am in love with you, Hunter Worthington."

My eyes widened and I looked at her, my hands found their way to her tiny waist. I could not form the words to say, so I leaned in and planted a kiss on her mouth. Hopefully, that would say all the words I could not say. I was attracted to her, but I did not feel the same way. It was also a bit too soon for her to say that. We had only been official for a few weeks now, and had been talking for a little before that. Maybe I was in shock.

Or maybe you just have feelings for someone else.

The doorbell rang and I inwardly thanked whoever it was at the door for saving me from a conversation after the kiss Eliza and I shared.

"I should go get that." I pulled away from the kiss and cleared my throat.

"Yeah," she softly said, nodding her head, "you should. I'll just finish setting stuff up."

"Okay, be right back." I told her as I walked upstairs.

I took a deep breath before I opened the door. The party was irrelevant; I did not want to celebrate my birthday with a bunch of teenagers who only knew my name and not my story. They would only get drunk off their asses and boast about how they came to my party to everyone. Sometimes being the boy in school who everybody knew was not always a good thing. I barely had friends because of it. I did not know who to trust and it was sad. I knew I could trust Aniya's stubborn ass. I had told her about my parent's situation, she was still my friend, and she did not tell a single soul. She was very trustworthy and I was glad we became as close as we did. Or at least I thought she was trustworthy, but now I wasn't so sure. I hadn't talked to her since the day she came over my house and she found out that I was dating Eliza.
