Chapter 13-The Masked Cousin.

After my little ‘mishap’ with Double L Lockhart, I was late for class and when I got there it was deserted and locked. I wondered onto the soccer fields and Edith came to greet me.

“What took you so long?” She complained.

“I got…err…distracted.” I replied hesitantly. Edith was preoccupied with something else and so hadn’t really heard my feeble response. It didn’t really matter because the final bell went off at that moment. In less than two seconds flat, the halls were full if chattering teenagers. I ignored all the greetings I got from passing friends and assorted creeps as I hastened myself on the journey to 13 Mist Lane…or as I call it:

My Domain.

The driveway was deserted. Normal for when I arrived at my home, the drive was usually empty because my Aunt Stephanie hadn’t arrived yet. Aunt Stephanie’s a Marketing Agent for some company owned by the one and only William Waters. She normally comes home at around seven o’clock and she drives an old red Mustang which seems to be working even after being hurled off of a cliff (It was the same car that my parents were found in when they….you know). But to my surprise, she was actually home and the car wasn’t parked in the drive way but when I looked to my left, it was parked on the side of the road.

I whirled these thoughts around in my head as I opened the door and stepped in.

“I’m home!” I called as I tossed my overweight backpack into the corner next to the stainless steel banister.

“Oh, Samantha. You’re home!” She sounded excited, more than usual. I walked into the hall between the kitchen and the study following her voice to where she was sitting at a table with a cup and a saucer in her hand.

“How was school?” She asked.

“The usual.” I replied not mentioning the complete magnitude of how awful ‘usual’ actually meant. She looked at the ring on her ring finger and declared excitedly “Kevin and I are getting married! It’s going to be great! He’s got a brother your age who’ll soon be your cousin.”

Which one’s Kevin?” I asked. Aunt Stephanie’s been dating a lot (I can never keep track of her many boyfriends) and now suddenly she’s getting married?!

Wow, that was fast.

“The one who works with me. Black hair, tall, fair complexion?” She elaborated.

”Oh that Kevin!” Frankly I was happy for her. At least it won't be so lonely at home since now I’d have a cousin!

“We should invite him and his son over!” I surprised myself by saying this. “You mean brother and it’s already done. They’ll be her at six.” She then shooed me away. I grabbed my backpack and dragged it up the stairway. I dumped it in the bare corner of my room and ripped open the wardrobe doors. I grabbed my best pair of jeans (By best I mean without any holes in it) and a blue T-shirt. I made myself presentable. By the time I was done it was already four. It had taken me fifteen minutes to do so. I went down stairs to help Aunt Stephanie clean up a bit before our guests arrived.

“Sam, could you check on the time for me?” Aunt Stephanie asked. Her black dyed hair was pinned up with a silver butterfly clip; she wore her brand new black dress. She looked all-round classy, elegant and definitely worth dating. She was busy adjusting the clip in her hair in the bathroom mirror when she spoke.

I walked in just as she had finished adjusting it

“Wow! Are you trying to upstage me?” I asked sarcastically of course.
