Chapter 30-Strange Nerdocity.

“I still can’t believe that I was asleep the whole time.” Edith said.

We were on our way to school the following day. Archie’s portal had sent us back to Riverview just as planned but we appeared on Edith’s lawn right at the crack of dawn. Luckily on the same day that we needed to be there though. Sometimes the time in which you enter a portal is not the same as the time space on the other end of the portal. At least that’s what I’ve been told.

I shrugged.

“I guess Cassandra must have forced a lot of work on you.” I said

“Actually, no” Edith said as she walked beside me wearing the dull sky blue and grey uniform that we were forced to, “there wasn’t really anything to do. We just had to help. Besides I needed the rest for today’s exam.”

Riverview Secondary…just the name makes you shudder.

Today is The Final Day of the Final Exams.

It really was like murder for Miss Evermore to do such a thing just a day before the actual last day of school for the year, the day when everybody just goofs off or just don’t show up.

A cold wind blew past me seeping into every pore of my body and I shivered. “The weather’s about as gloomy as we are today.” I said gazing up at the dark grey clouds that hung above.

Somehow something didn’t feel quite right. Although Emily’s rose still seemed to comfort me, I still felt strange.

Okay, so I kept it! Sue me!

I just couldn’t part with it and when I tried the feeling I got was a little like the one I get whenever Andy and I have to part ways.

Only not as bad.

Edith laughed.

“Maybe Minerva.” She said nudging me with her elbow glancing up at the rose, “Hey won’t Evermore complain about the rose?”

I shook my head.

The rose was behind my left ear again.

“Why?” I asked.

Edith shrugged. “Well, if that old Menopausal hag is making us write exams before the hols, then don’t you think she’ll ban flowers if she sees it?”

Edith was right. Ms. Evermore would never be able to appreciate the beauty of the flowers overlapping petals or swirling blue and white versimilarity.

“Hey, how about you throw it away. I mean, it’s wilting and…” Edith stopped to look at my pale expression.

We stopped walking.

“Yeah. I think you’re right.” I admitted disappointedly.

The sad thing is that she was…right. Some of the rose’s petals were beginning to hang, threatening to fall off. It was hardly in the state it was in when Emily gave it to me but just the thought of leaving it had a strange effect on me.

Edith sensed this.

“How about you keep a few petals in your pocket? That way you’ll always have it with you and Ever-grumpy won’t confiscate it.”

I smiled and did as she said. I plucked four of the petals closer to the inside of the wilting overlapping petals and carefully placed them in my back pocket.

“Thanks, Edith.”

She motioned for us to continue walking again. “Hey, what are friends for?”
