CHAPTER 7 (EDITED)
"BUT, VANILLA SEEMS more traditional. What do you think, Char?" Vanessa's voice snapped me out of the cake filled trance I was in. If I could, I would've bought all the delicacies in front of me. I would have to hit the hotel gym super hard, however, since my metabolism would eventually give up on me.
"I really don't mind. As long as it's cake!" I replied.
She rolled her eyes at me and tugged on Aiden's arm, waiting for his input.
"I've already tried more than a hundred cakes, babe. I don't think my tongue can even tell the difference between vanilla and chocolate anymore," Aiden shrugged.
I was supposed to be more helpful than I was being but planning for these things so close to the wedding was stressful. Vanessa had heard from someone that the cake shop we were at had the most exquisite wedding cakes but she couldn't get hold of them before we came here. Fortunately for us, they were super quick and were able to get whatever cake we wanted ready in just a few days. Of course, that also came with a hefty raise in the price.
Realizing that I should be of more help I said,
"I think we should go with vanilla, though. You can't go wrong with vanilla in a wedding. Everyone likes vanilla a little bit"
"Okay, see that helps. Which one of these then?" Vanessa asked, pointing to the two vanilla flavored cakes we had short-listed.
I gulped the small glass of water we had been given to cleanse our palettes before tasting and tried the two again.
The first one was a simple yet elegant piece. It was supposed to be a five-tier cake with bands of golden silken wrapped around the finishing. The middle tier had some intricate designs drawn on it but it was barely visible with the icing and cake both being white.
The second one, although, was definitely something. Unlike the first one, it was a seven-tier cake. Some of the tiers were decorated with roses in pink and white running in a ladder-like pattern. Also, the tiers had designs in gold icing. The top was also just a giant circular crowd of roses.
Vanessa's head turned towards me as we both finished the tasting piece of that particular cake. The decision was made.
"We'll take the second one," We said in unison.
Aiden laughed as the employee shuffled out before giving us a weird look.
"Are you sure you two aren't some long lost fraternal twins?"
I smiled and hooked my arm through Vanessa's and she rested her head on my shoulder.
I was going to miss my best friend. Sure, we would still be in the same city and we would see each other all the time but she was starting her own family now and with her being the only real friend I had, it was going to take some time to adjust.
"I need food," Vanessa said as we got in the car to get back to the hotel.
I just couldn't wait to back indoors away from the scorching heat of California.
"We just had fifty pounds of cake. But, sure." Aiden chuckled, reaching out to grab Vanessa's hand as he started driving out of the cake store.
"We could just grab something from the hotel?" I said, and for some reason, I was hungry too despite all the cake.
They both nodded and the rest of the ride was spent with them flirting while I started out of the window. It was like high school all over again.
Except, I found myself missing Ethan since he was the one who would be the fourth wheel making us a little more balanced. I cringed, suddenly, at the memory of last night and forced myself to think about something else.
