CHAPTER 9 (EDITED)
IT HAD BEEN just over an hour since I had arrived at the party and in the span of an hour Ethan had managed to annoy me with his corny pickup lines since he was a little tipsy, Vanessa had too much alcohol in her system, and I had to practically sprint someone from nearly drowning.
"So, if we're all going to die one day then what's the point of this?" Vanessa slurred from beside me. Oh, she was going to regret all this alcohol so much tomorrow and I'd have to pick up the pieces, no doubt.
Aiden, to her right, glanced at me and mouthed a 'what'.
I shrugged not knowing what Vanessa was going on about. She usually rambled about random shit whenever she was drunk. Gradually, she would lean towards the emotional drunk and by the end, she was a crazy monster.
"What do you mean, Van?" I asked, not wanting her to feel like she was being ignored.
I did not care for the answer but the party wasn't even that entertaining and leaving drunk Vanessa would only come to bite me back in my ass.
She shook her head at me as if I were the one asking the bizarre question.
"I mean, once we die what do we with all the money and love and yada yada in the world? It's all gone and so are we, dumbass." Drunk Vanessa was also rude.
Aiden ran his hand up and down her back to soothe her and replied,
"I don't know and I don't think I care to find out either."
She scoffed,
"You guys are no fun. Char, go have fun. Have fun with guys. Have fun with food. Just stop being, you know, uptight and responsible and have fun. Fun...is that even a word? Fun." Vanessa rambled on and repeated the word fun a hundred times after that.
"That I agree with!" Ethan said as he came and stood in front of us.
"How do you always pop out of nowhere at the right time? You need to stop that," I said, incredulously.
For some reason, Vanessa found that hilarious and started laughing out loud. Super loud.
"Okay one—she," Ethan pointed to Vanessa, "is way past the stage of being just drunk and she'll have a killer headache tomorrow. And two, you," He pointed at me, "do need to stop being uptight."
I gasped.
"I am not uptight."
"Yes, you are, babydoll. You need to come to terms with that. Accept it." He smiled smugly.
"I am not uptight, Ethan!" I repeated hoping he would disappear into thin air as quickly as he appeared.
He gave me a blank look.
"Said every uptight person."
I knew where this was going and we were going to have to stop but he was riling me up.
"Take care of her," I said to Aiden and got up and started walking away from the crowd.
"Wait, where are you going?" Ethan called out behind me and I could hear him getting closer to me.
"Away from you, if you couldn't already tell."
"You can't stay away for long if you couldn't already tell." He mocked and I stopped to turn and give him a glare.
"Leave me alone, Ethan." I pleaded.
I just wanted a few moments to myself.
For some reason, the word uptight really ignited something in me. It made me feel like I was being compared to my mother and I did not want to be that woman. I wanted to be my own person but I realized with the whole controlling and responsible shit I was pulling, I was way too close to being her.
