Where We Go at Night

Chapter 8

Reina's POV

Me and Ashley hopped through the portal. I wondered if Reese or Newt would come. I hoped they would, but it would be kind of awkward if they did.

We landed in the soft grass by the castle. I spotted a bush full of colorful berries. I had never seen that bush there before, oddly. I went over to the bush and picked a purple berry. I was about to eat it but then Ashley slapped it out of my hand. "Ow!" I said, grabbing my hand in slight pain.

"That could be poisonous, Reina" Ashley exclaimed.

"Well let's find out!" I replied, and popped the berry in my mouth. "See? Not poisnous".

"Ok then. Race you to the castle!" She screamed and ran in the direction of our castle. I grabbed a large handfull of berries and ran after her.

I ran through the doors of the castle and skidded to a hault, almost falling over. Sitting on the first few steps of the grand staircase were Newt and Reese. Newt had his arm around Reese, who was crying his eyes out.

I was mad. Why was he crying? He had no reason to! I thought back to earlier today... how he broke my heart... my eyes started tearing up, threatening to spill at any moment. I buried my face in my hands and ran outside.

It was freezing outside. I ran to the campfire and my tears had stopped and had been replaced with a feeling of loneliness. I sat down on a log and took deep breaths. That was faster than I have ever ran before. I started a fire with some matches we hid under a rock. My hands started to warm up, but the rest of my body still shook because of the cold. I began to think again, and the tears started to fall.

Stupid thinking.

I heard footsteps behind me, and quickly wiped the tears off my face. Much to my dislike, Reese sat down next to me. He began to offer me his jacket but I just shoved his hand out of the way.

"What do you want?" I asked him harshly.

"To... apologize." He said softly.

"Do you think that's going to help? Cuz it's not. You shouldn't even be here... no, I shouldn't be here. Talking to you. Goodbye."

I sniffled, and walked away.

Once I found the portal, I climbed through, and went home, back to bed.

Reese's POV

I watched her run away from me. It was no use trying to follow her, she was faster than me, for sure.

I really messed up. I was clear that she liked m, but probably not anymore. Newt came up behind me.

"Hey, you ok?" he asked me.

"Not really..." I told him.

"Wanna go home?" He asked.

"Sure."

We walked away, through the portal, and went home, back to bed.
