"I'm proud of my heart. It's been played, stabbed, cheated, burned and broken, but somehow still works..."
Many people stared at me during the night, not only at my complete change in style but also to the man who followed me around like a lost puppy. It was a shock to everyone that I had brought a date, even more shocking when they found out he was one of my mothers workers.
The whispers and stares didn't go unnoticed as Kieran downed another glass of champagne, nervously looking around him at all the snobs giving him curious and disgusted looks.
"I now understand why you hate these things," Kieran whispered, his arm tightly wrapped around my waist as he steered me to a quieter area of the room. I smiled softly at him, remembering how uncomfortable I felt the first time I attended something like this.
"You can go back to the car if you like," my voice was soft as I took his hand in mine, seeing the distress in his eyes as he huffed out a deep breath. Shaking his head no despite the look on his face saying different.
"They will expect that of me, 'the drivers away back to his car'. I don't belong here," he sighed, as I sent a glare towards one of the females who stared at him in confusion. Bitch.
"Don't take it personally," I smiled, rubbing my thumb across his knuckle as he trembled beneath my touch.
"How can I not? I should of knew this was silly, you always come to these places alone. I'm sorry for putting you in this situation," his green eyes held sorrow as I once again felt bad. Why did I always have to feel bad for people?
We had only been dating a couple of days but I hat known the man for years, despite never fully bonding with him it pained me to see him so emotionally distressed. He was normally my rock when I came to these events. Giving me a prep talk to 'go get them superstar' before I got out the car and instantly coming to get me when I called to say I had enough.
Standing here now all I could do was reassure him that everything was fine, there was nothing to worry about.
"You know how the rich are, a lot of them can be so far up their own arse they can smell their ancestors but some are lovely you can't let all the looks put you off," he never said anything as he looked at the polished marble floor, his breathing heavy as I groaned.
"Come on, if you can deal with my mother you can deal with this," I laughed softly as his eyes lightened, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
"Can you not tell people that we are together?" he asked suddenly, his worried eyes pleading with me to keep our relationship quiet.
"Sure," I mumbled feeling slightly hurt. Why did he not want people to know he was with me? It should be me not wanting people to know I was with him? Never the less I smiled weakly, fixing my posture as one of my fellow business partners made his way towards us with his wife.
"Sapphire Stark," the old man smiled showing his staining teeth, his chubby cheeks becoming thicker as he scrunched them up. His eyes scanning me over with a hungry look.
