When Matt first arrived at Wammy's House, it took him six weeks to utter a word.

In fact, he didn't even want to look at anyone. Instead, he kept his gaze cast down at his feet, or when he could, fixed on his video games.
It wasn't that he was naturally anti social or that he necessarily disliked the residents at Wammy's House. He just didn't want to forget his mother's face. He found the more people he saw, the different smiles, eyes, voices, the foggier the memory of his mother's worn and beautiful face became.
And he refused to let her memory die.
He simply wouldn't allow it.
Of course, this didn't go unnoticed by Rodger, who became increasingly more and more worried. He tried everything he could think of, bribery, pleading, threatening...All for nothing. Well, except Matt's resentment.

It wasn't until one seemingly normal evening when a young blond boy entered his life, he cast his eyes upwards and saw an angel.
An angel that caused him to cast all other worries and resentment aside for just a moment. Those eyes that held all the mystery and power of the ocean. That golden hair that put the sunlight to shame.
"Uh...hi" Matt mumbled, barely audible.
The blond glanced in his direction and flashed him a smile that caused Matt's heart to stop in it's tracks.
"My name's Matt" he added, and awkwardly stuck his hand out, hoping to every god collectively that he would return the gesture.
"I'm Mello"
Mello.
That name was music to his ears.

After that, they were seldom out of each others company, always causing trouble somewhere. Even though Rodger was forever scolding them for getting into trouble, and usually poor Near was the victim of their antics and pranks, he was secretly grateful that they had found each other. He saw a change in Matt that never failed to put a smile on his face.
But Matt was still afraid. He was terrified of once again, being abandoned. He couldn't lose Mello. He simply couldn't.

"Mello?"
"What is it, Matt?"
"Promise me...promise you won't leave me"
"What makes you think that I would ever leave you?"
"Well, my mother did. My father did. I could never be sure..."
"...I see...yes Matt, I promise you, I will never leave you. You have nothing to worry about"

Those words echoed around his head as he gazed around his and Mello's room, the ghost of his presence vanishing the more he stared. Rain pattered on the window, harder and harder adding to Matt's blind fury.
He bit his lip, fighting back tears, unable to comprehend the fact that he was really gone.
