Lina sat on a wooden stool admiring the tree as she sketched it on the back of an old receipt. The pen was almost dead so some of the line did not appear on the paper but she didn’t mind she was bored. Bored with her job, bored with her life; she so badly wanted something to happen, a fantasy that everyone wants.

A phone vibrated on the table. Lina looked over hoping for some relieve from her boredom. Lina leaped for the phone her long brown hair flying out behind her.

“Hello! Greenwood stables, how may I help you?” she said in the chirpiest voice she could muster.

“Yes”

“Meet me in the white of the forest by noon.” The line went dead. Two male voices, two men had had a conversation, which her phone just happened to pick up on.

‘Weird’ she thought to herself but couldn’t help wonder what the whole thing was about. ‘“white of the forest” ah that would be the place that always snows wonder what they want to do there’

She looked at the clock which sat on an old bundle of hay which no house would dare eat, it had mold and she could swear puke in it. In bold letters 10:03 was written across the face of the clock. She shrugged only a couple more hours before her shift was over then she could find out about that call. She stood up and looked into a trough of water.

She had long brown hair which fell down three quarters down her back. She usually tied it back but she hadn’t had time that morning she had woken up late again because of her bad dreams. In her dreams she would be burning in a fire that never stopped in would engulf her but just before she died the fire would subside then start again. She shivered as she thought about it.

She had blue eyes which gracefully slided over everything she saw as if there was something behind it. She had always been a bit where in the way she could see or hear something that now one else could hear but then the sensation would disappear and it would be like nothing had ever happened.

There was only one constant which continually proved itself to be unordinary and that was her favourite horse, the horse which stopped her from leaving he stables. She had a bond with the horse which meant the world to her, it meant her life, and that horse’s name was Speed.

Speed had recently bucked at a stable hand which had tried to ride him and was being kept inside. Many people who had tried to ride the horse had been bucked off and then they tried to sue and get Speed put down but there was always a problem even the vets couldn’t get close to him he he didn’t want them to. And the funny thing was he would let Lina. Speed would let Lina do anything to him, even kill him.

Speed was a black stallion who was the fastest horse she had ever seen, many people had joked she should become a jokey and ride him in horse races “you’d make a fortune” they would say and it was probably true but Speed didn’t want that. She knew because he had told her.

The only proof she had was because he talked to her, in thought only but it was still proof. Probably proof she was insane but it was proof never the less.

A black taxi drove up to the stables a boy got out and handed something to the taxi driver who promptly dropped his jaw and drove off. She eyed the boy. He was a head taller than her and looked to be a year older,

‘Seventeens they always manage to say something rude to drop the jaw of someone who is rude’ she thought to herself clicking her tongue on the roof of her mouth. The boy had blonde locks which fell to his shoulders, for a moment she could have sworn – she pushed away that thought she didn’t need to be any more insane. He had green piercing eyes which seemed to see all which she feared. He walked up to her his gaze unwavering. He seemed the complete opposite of Lina.

“How may I help you?” she said in a low tone, trying to keep fear from her voice

“I need a horse to get me into the forest”

“Old fashioned” she mumbled then said clearly “okay next group wo-"

“Alone” he growled.

‘what’s he so grumpy about?’ she thought then something in her mind clicked, that man no boy, was on the other end of the phone call he was one of the people she overheard. "I just had to go with him" she thought.

“Okay how much do you have?” she queried. He looked pretty poor, his clothes were ragged at the end and he looked as if he had just been in a fight with someone or something… she pushed away another unnerving thought

“How much do you want?” he questioned.

‘Avoiding the question aren’t we’ she thought then answered “Two hundred.”

“Done.”

“Wait here.” She washed her hands and grabbed a lead. She walked him out to a paddock full of fast and agile horses, if he, they, were going out into the forest then the need agile and fast.

“Pick one” She said, gesturing to the paddock.

“That white one looks good,” he said. In his eyes was a gleam one you get when you have seen something before and he had it. The horse he started towards was named Snow the other horse she owed her life to. She was even pickier than Speed and refused to let anyone, even Lina ride her. She let people brush her, hand feed her, wash her, but the second someone was on her back they would be thrown into the next tomorrow, that was the same if someone wanted to lead her she was a stubborn mule.

“I wouldn’t if I was,” She started as she saw Sirge trying to lead Snow.

He walked up to the white horse carefully cooing “Good girl. Good girl. Good girl." Snow reared and galloped around the paddock spooking all the other horses. All the horse started running panicked and stable hand jumped into the paddock trying to calm them once they had caught them. Snow bolted straight towards Lina.

“Shhhhh. It’s okay Snow” she held her arms out wide in a hugging posture. Snow crashed into her but suddenly stopped at contact. ‘Calm down girl’ she thought to Snow.

“You should have never tried to ride this horse she won’t even let me” Lina said to the boy. He was scratching the back of his neck under his locks.

“Could I please have a go of riding her?”

“If you want seven broken bones have a go” she told him but he merely nodded and grabbed a saddle from the fence post and pulled the straps tight. He climbed into the saddle after whispering something in Snow’s ear. Lina watching in amazement as the horse complied.

‘Not bad boy, not bad, but how did you do it?’ she thought her brow furrowing

The boy trotted the horse back to Lina

“What’s your name?” he asked.

“Lina. Yours?”

“Sirge. hey, Lina? Do you know where there might be white in the forest.”

“Yes”

“Take me there” his voice was strong and didn’t waver as if he knew what was going to happen next.

She slightly nodded her head “Yes”
