The sky had warmed up but it was still chilly, a cop car zoomed past me, lights flashing, sirens wailing. Another thug waiting to be put on trial after his eyes had become less bloodshot. Where to go? Annie? No she wouldn't want me. That was it. Or was it? I looked left and right and then crossed the road. Was I sure about this? Truthfully, no. I had met him yesterday and I doubt Rakim wanted white trash to deal with. It was worth a shot or I would be on the streets probably dead by the morning. I approached his building, walked up to the door, took a breath and was about to ring the doorbell when the door burst open causing me to take a step back.
"Mina? What happened to your face? Are you okay?" I looked at him, I looked at his caring brown eyes and I couldn't help it. I burst into tears. Rakim put his arms around me. I just stood there. This was the sort of attention I craved. I wanted my mom to be like this.
"Hey, hey, shah." Rakim stroked my hair. Slowly he took away his strong arms and looked right in my eyes. He put one arm round my shoulder and led me back through the hallways and staircases until we reached his apartment. He sat me on the old couch and took my bag. Then, he walked over to the sink. Rakim came back with a glass of water and a damp cloth. We said nothing as he nursed my injury. I winced a few times but the cool droplets sent a soothing sensation through my eye area. He put the cloth down and handed me the glass.
"Now, are you going to tell me what happened?" I took a long sip of water and then gave him the glass.
"Well, I had an argument with mom and she, she." I cried again.
"It's okay, I understand." But does he? I carried on with the story.
"She hit me and so I packed my things, I didn't know where I was going, I still don't." I wiped my eyes on the blue hoody, leaving black marks where my mascara had run. I looked at the cuff.
"Shit I'm sorry." I cried even more.
"It’s just a stupid jumper don't worry, listen Mina I know we only properly met yesterday and you probably think I'm a murderer or whatever. But you can stay here as long as you want. In fact it would be nice seeing as the boys are going to Michigan for a week. You seem like a great girl and if we don't get on in the next few days then I will help you find another place we can part ways and never speak to each other again. How does that sound?"
I sniffed and smiled.
"Thank you Rakim."
"Come here." He gave me a hug. I hugged him back. He smelt of cigarettes. I liked it.
"You wanna sleep for a bit?" He asked.
"Yeah, sure."
"You can sleep in my room, I'll sleep on the couch its coo."
"Are you sure? I don't mind."
"Definitely. It's this way." Rakim showed me to his room. It was tidy - unlike the rest of the house. The window was open and the curtains flapped in the breeze. He placed my bag on the floor and shut the window. Rakim went back to leaning in the doorway.
"I'm heading out for a bit. If you need anything just take it okay?"
"Thanks Rakim." He smiled. Damn, that smile. Rakim left. It was silent in the house. No sound at all. I took off the hoodie and my jeans so I was left in my panties and Nat's tee. I pulled back the covers of the bed. They were dark blue and looked like they had recently been washed. I thought about how many broads had been in this bed before but I quickly brushed that image from my mind. I climbed into the bed and pulled the covers over me. The bed smelt of cigarettes as well. I looked over to the bedside table and saw two polystyrene cups stacked on top of each other. I smiled. He was that type of guy. I wasn't sleepy but I felt like I could sleep for a million years. But do I want to sleep for a million years? I would miss out on things like-
And mid thought I drifted off to sleep. I awoke several hours later. I stretched out my arms and forgetting about my injury I touched my eye.
“FUCK!” I yelped. That shit hurt like a motherfucker. Not cool mom, not cool. A few seconds later, I could hear the front door open. I quickly turned over and pretended to be asleep. Why? I don’t know, just my usual reaction. Then the bedroom door opened. I could hear Rakim creep in. I opened one of my eyes. He slipped past the bed and made his way over to the dresser. As he opened the drawer I noticed something hanging out of his pocket. Was that a glock?
Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck.
He shoved it into the drawer. I turned over and relived my wake up scene.
“Hey, Mina, you okay?”
“Yeah..I think” I touched my eye again.
“FUCK!” I yelped again. He chuckled.
“Bitch, I told you not to touch it.” I smiled.
“Uh no you didn’t”
“Well I would’ve done. But I uh uh uh. Anyway, you want any food?”
“Yes please.”
“Please? You don’t have to use manners around here shawty. What you want?” I laughed.
“Anything. I don’t mind.” He thought for a moment.
“Pizza? You like pizza?” I nodded.
“I’ll get right on that shit then!” And with that he left the room.
