English prepositions like from, in, on, at, and with correspond with postpositions in Japanese. Instead of saying from Washington DC you would say Washington DC from. English and Japanese are the same in this instance.

Counters
In Japanese counters are suffixes. These can seem quite confusing (because they are! Some Japanese people don't even understand all of them!) as they are not in the English language at all. Counters are placed after numbers to express the quantity, or amount of people and things. Counters can vary depending on the size, shape or the type of item. An example would be go-nin no hito, which means 'the five people'. Or go-hiki no inu, which means 'the five dogs'. Go-dai no karuma means 'the five cars'. Nin, hiki, and dai are the counters foe these respective types of items.
