"I really like your poem. Where did you learn to write like that?” I asked Derek.
“Well I guess it’s just natural.” He smirked as he continued editing his poem. Derek knew exactly how to make me feel better. He was such a sweet guy. All of a sudden my thoughts were interrupted by Derek. “You know if you ever need someone to talk to I’m here for you Liz.” My eyes started to tear up and before I could stop them they started to fall. He then pulled me into a hug and rubbed my back to comfort me. I felt like I’ve been crying too much lately and decided to let it all out and talk to Derek about it. He was almost as close to me as Sarah, but no one could ever be as close to me as Tommy was.
“Derek, I want to talk.” He nodded giving me permission to go ahead. “I just want to know why Tommy would do that to me. We’ve been friends since the 1st grade. I fell in love with him in the 6th grade and he said he loved me back. Then come to find out that once we start dating he’s starts sleeping around with Veronica. Then he has the audacity to send me a note trying to convince me to talk with him. What’s wrong with him? Better yet what’s wrong with me?”
“Shh, Liz nothing’s wrong with you. He’s stupid for sleeping around on you. You are the most perfect girl, and any man would be lucky to have you.” I was shocked. Was he trying to just cheer me up or did he seriously think that?
“Really? Are you just trying to cheer me up?”
“No Liz. I truly believe that.” He pulled me back a bit so he could stare into my eyes. “Liz, you’re beautiful, smart, interesting, and completely perfect. I would have never done that to you. You deserve so much better than that.” I didn’t even think. I just threw my arms around his neck and kissed him. He was shocked at first, but kissed back. I pulled away from him.
“Thank you Derek. You mean a lot to me.”
“Liz I’ve wanted to ask you since the day I’ve met you. Will you be my girlfriend?”
I was shocked for a second. Then I quickly recovered. “I think it still might be to early, but as soon as I get over him I’d love to.”
“I thought it might be too early, but I’m going to hold you to that promise.”
“I hope you do.” I smiled at him and he gave me a heart melting one back. We started doing our project again. About 35 minutes later we heard my front door open. I looked at the clock and realized it was probably my brother. I grabbed Derek’s hand and we headed down to see my brother. Bradley’s only 14 and is adorable for his age. He has brown shaggy hair and blue-gray eyes. He’s 5’10 already and has a girlfriend. I’ve been taking care of him since my mom got her new job 8 yrs ago and dad was always busy with work, which he still seems to be. While mom’s off traveling and dad is in his office until 9-10 at night (which is almost every night), I’m stuck making dinner and putting him to bed. Today of course would be no different. Derek and I reached the Living Room and see Bradley sitting on the couch watching the television. “What’s up Brad?”
“Nothing much sis, who’s he?” Bradley was always overprotected of me. I thought he was going to murder Tommy for cheating on me. He officially hated him now, and he said he wouldn’t let any guy do that to me again.
“Oh Derek this is my brother Bradley, Bradley this is my friend Derek. Be nice!” I introduced.
“Yeah, yeah! Hey it’s Derek right?” Derek nodded and shook my brothers hand. “You know if you hurt Liz I’ll kill you right?”
“I don’t blame you. I’ve got a younger sister and I know exactly how you feel. I’d never hurt Liz. I care about her too much.”
“That’s good to hear. So Liz, what’s for dinner? I’m starved.” Bradley yelled as I was dragging Derek into the kitchen.
