We quietly unlock the back door that leads to the small, messy backyard. I hear them scratching at the front door behind us. Luckily, the door we opened didn't creek or our cover would've been blown.
"Were you bit?," I ask quietly as we walk through the back, "you know what can happen.".
"No.", he says harshly, as if it were something not to be spoken about.
Something seems off with E, but I'm too nervous to ask him. The muttering gets quieter and quieter as we get further away from the house. What is there to do in a situation like this, where nothing is safe and nobody is there to help...?
We keep walking, trying to stay low and out of sight. Looking for a safe shelter is almost impossible at this point, what does safe even fucking mean anymore? Somehow, we end up in the woods, which I am not sure if it is the best place to be or not. I'm scared for when it starts getting dark. There is a big cabin-like home that is in our sight. Maybe it belongs to a hunter or something? Who the fuck even knows..
"Let's check it out.", E says quietly, grabbing my hand.
You can hear the leaves crunching and crumbling under our feet after each step we take. As we're approaching the cabin, E turns around and puts his finger to his lips, signing to be quiet. I shake my head in understandment.
