When Castiel awoke, he found himself in a strange place, with large white buildings towering over the galaxy filled sky, clouds lining around the bottoms and silver roads leading around the seemingly endless city. He slowly stood, his body feeling strangely light as he looked around, then down at himself, his brows furrowed as he saw nothing but blue light in the shape of a human body.
"Castiel." He heard a very familiar voice, turning and seeing the awe inspiring white mass of the brightest light he had ever seen in a humanoid form. He recognized it though, and bowed before his father, though it felt strange to do so in his light form.
"Father." Castiel said before standing back up, looking around in confusion. "What is this place? Where's Dean and Sam? Where's Earth?"
"This is where angels go when they die. Beautiful, isn't it?" He father answered, turning his featureless face towards the city and a pleased aura radiating off of him. "I never intended angels to die, but the world is full of mystery and terror. However, your death was of neither, and that is quite a feat that no other angel has ever even come close to."
Castiel let it sink into his head for a moment before he finally spoke. "I'm....dead? But I was just at the hospital. Then I was throwing up my grace and..." Castiel trailed off, a conflicted look crossing over his face. "How did I die? Was I poisoned?"
God let out a laugh, his voice warm and inviting. "No, Castiel. I believe the humans call it a broken heart. Your body just couldn't keep up with your emotions." He said, a hint of sympathy in his voice for the confused angel.
"Oh..." Was all Castiel said at first, his wings fluttering a gentle breeze that ran through the air before he looked down at the cloud-covered ground. "You probably feel ashamed of me dying in such a non angelic way."
"Quite the contrary, Castiel. I created you different from the others. I made you, knowing that you would die this death. The moment you met Dean, the moment that you became the first angel to truly fall in love...well, your fate was sealed." God replied.
"But why?" Castiel asked, feeling a bit of frustration washing over him. "Why did it have to be me? Why am I the one that had to feel the pain of losing Dean? What could anyone have possibly learned from that?"
"Castiel. Listen to me. For as long as the universe had been alive, angels have been following me. Lucifer was the first being to ever sin, and that sin was doubt in me. It made him powerful, and beyond what any of the other angels could ever hope to accomplish." God explained, the light of his form slowly changing into every color imaginable as he looked towards the galaxies in the sky. "You are the first angel to die for love, and that dedication, the power that it created, was more magnificent and stronger than Lucifer could ever hope to accomplish. You were a powerful being Castiel, however brief, and every angel trembled when they felt your strength."
"But then I died? This doesn't make sense!" Castiel complained, letting out a soft huff at his own stupidity. However, God just smiled as pleasantly as always, and that calmed him more than he could imagine.
"Yes, you died, but the strength you had may have just changed the world as you know it. I can send you back if you wish, or I can let you remain here in this paradise I have created for angels, but remember..." God said, leaning forwards and letting out a soft whisper in Enochian. Castiel's eyes widened, and the world around seemed just a little bit duller as his grace began to thrum.
"I want to thank you for the offer, but...my paradise is on Earth." Castiel said, his wings flapping several times in excitement. God grinned, nodding his head and placing a purely white fingertip on Castiel's forehead.

Castiel felt groggy and in a ton of pain as he opened his eyes, letting out a groan as he sat up. His head throbbed, and his spine felt like it was on fire as he looked around. The room was a mess, the chairs and machinery knocked over. Yet, there was no sound of panic outside, nobody in the room except for Sam in the corner and Dean lying on the bed. It was as if no one had heard the sounds at all.
He tried to stand, pain making him hiss as he gripped at his back. He looked over his shoulder, freezing when he saw the state of his wings. Frail and graying, lines of hot, molten flesh cracking all the way through the ridge and feathers. He let out a small gasp, until a small, repeating noise caught his attention.
It was the heart monitor.
He dragged himself to his feet as quickly as he could, not even noticing Sam's groan as the man woke up. He touched Dean's hand, looking at his face, and his heart began to soar as he saw that the hunter's eyes were opening, letting out a soft gasp of relief as tears began to flow.
Dean's eyes focused on nothing for the first moment until they finally turned, meeting Castiel's gaze and smiling. "H-hey, angel." He forced out, his voice light and a bit broken from lack of use.
"Hey, Dean." Castiel said, his hand finding Dean's cheek and stroking it. He leaned forwards and kissed the hunter, his wings shivering as they began falling apart.
Dean let out a soft 'mmph,' breaking the kiss and looking at his wings. "Cas, what happened?" Dean asked, furrowing his brows. Castiel only smiled though, feeling the feathers and flesh turning to ash and leaving only the skeleton of his wings left.
"It's okay." Castiel whispered, feeling a presence and looking to see a faint white light in the corner of the room where Sam was staring at it in wonder. He let out a small smile, turning back and hugging Dean with all he had now that he was human. "It's all going to be okay."
