The beats from the heart monitor were growing ever slower as Castiel sat beside Dean's bed, a defeated and regretful look in his eyes as he held the hunter's hand. The doctor had checked in about ten minutes ago, and he conclusion was as resolute as always. Dean wouldn't live much longer.

Castiel wished he could make time stand still, but that was a power only the archangels knew, and it wouldn't do anything for him anyways. Dean's mind was too far gone, and even inside his head, his judgement was clouded and his memories disappearing. All that was left was Dean on a small patch of white floor, the rest of the world surrounded by black and emptiness.

The door opened, and Sam walked in, his eyes swollen with his crying as he took a seat beside Castiel, rubbing his hand over the stubble that had begun to grow. Castiel was sure he had a full on beard at this point.

"The doctor told me he was in his last stages." Sam said, his voice stunted and barely above a whisper with the well of emotion that made his soul quiver. Castiel let his grace wrap around him gently, comforting him as Dean's drew in a ragged breath.

Minutes passed before Sam spoke again, his words stuck by the little sobs that managed to get through. "I'd never thought it end like. I figured we would be stuck together to the bitter end." Sam said, taking a shaky breath before wiping at the tears with a sniff.

"I never thought I would lose someone I love." Castiel admitted, tears welling in his eyes and obscuring his vision. "It hurts so much."

"I know." Was all Sam said before they fell silent, the monitor's beep only once every few seconds. Castiel leaned forwards, letting go of Sam's soul and moving over Dean's, soothing him as he rubbed his thumb of his cheek.

"Just once more." Castiel whispered before letting his lips just touch Dean's, letting his grace slide over the sensitive flesh. The monitor let out a final beep before the sound of a continuous ring, Dean's last breath brushing across Castiel's face before everything fell still.

Castiel let out a whimper, breaking from the kiss and pressing his forehead to Dean's, tears falling onto his cheeks. He held on just a bit tighter, whispering in enochain as he begged Dean to come back. He felt Sam's hand on his shoulder but shook it off, pulling Dean closer as he cried.

The door behind them opened, and he heard the soft voice of the nurse that took care of Dean walked in, walking over to the monitor and switching it off and reading out the time of death to herself as she wrote it down. Castiel felt his heart tear at that, at the finality of the sound, that he began sobbing, feeling Dean's soul slipping away.

"I'll give you a moment. You can come find me when you are ready." She whispered to Sam, and left the room with the click of the door behind her.

"Cas?" Sam called, but Castiel just cried harder. He didn't think he could ever hear that nickname again, and he found himself struggling to breath, until his airways felt completely blocked off and he began gagging.

"Cas?!" Sam grabbed Castiel by the shoulder, pulling back from Dean as Castiel shuddered his body convulsing as he gagged again, whips of blue light fluttering to the floor before it disappeared. His eyes widened, and his throat convulsed again before more of the light flooded out, pooling onto the floor and whipping up before falling onto the ground like a cloud.

"What the hell?" Sam asked, but Castiel couldn't respond as he gagged again, the light pouring from his mouth like a waterfall. He held tightly to Sam, tears sliding down his cheeks as he continued to gag again and again, more light coming from his mouth in waves.

He felt his heart growing faster and faster, his muscles seizing into a stiff position. His grace pushed from his body in an almost explosion, filling the room with a blue light and knocking Sam back against the wall. It seared the angel's skin as every pore was letting out the infused grace, gasps of pain leaving his throat as he tried to move, tried to do anything, but couldn't.

The entire room thrummed with the blue energy, and Castiel barely had to time to yell for Dean before the grace flooded back into his body, balling up inside him with a burning energy that seared his skin with burns across his chest and stomach. He tried to move, to claw at his clothes, but just as his fingers twitched to move, his grace broke from his mouth, nose, and eyes, filling his senses with the burning light.

The light disappeared, and a dizzying blackness took its place as he slumped to the ground.
