Day 12
"Bobby! Wake up!" Something big crashed against me with a loud thump and an elbow in my rips.
"Go away Kennedi." I mumbled, shoving at her shoulder.
"You have to help me make my Halloween costume!" She insisted. I blinked a few times and poked my head above the bed covers. Kennedi was making a pouty face at me, her hair a disheveled mess framing her face. I sighed and nodded slowly, sitting up.
"Okay, okay. I'll be down in a minute." Kennedi ran from the room with a gleeful whoop; I shook my head in exasperation, and climbed out of bed. My wet clothes from yesterday were draped over the back of my desk chair- a few dark spots still colored them. I threw on a tshirt, not bothering to change my pajama pants, and ambled down the stairs. The smell of pancakes and waffles filled my nose and I grinned, leaping over the last three stairs. My mom was standing in the kitchen, peering at the bottom of a pancake to determine if it was ready. She looked up when I walked in and smiled.
"Did Kennedi enlist you for costume duty?" She asked, expertly flipping the pancake brown side up. I nodded with a yawn, rubbing my hand across my face. "And after that- you know what you have to do, young man." She pointed a batter-drenched spoon at me accusingly. At first I thought she meant the challenge, but then I realized she was talking about the bigger challenge here. The one every senior had to face.
"College applications. Right. I'll get on that." I sighed, and, grabbing a pancake from the completed pile, walked to the living room where Kennedi had laid out supplies for costume building. "So what are you thinking this year?"
"A tap dancer!" Kennedi announced proudly, brandishing a few feathers in my face. I gently pushed them away and surveyed her materials. Then I shrugged.
"Okay. Whatever you want." She eagerly pounced on an old skirt of hers and started chopping the bottom with her scissors. Laughing, I was about to reach over and help her when the phone rang.
"I'll be right back," I said and grabbed the landline, yes we still had one of those, from the wall. "Hello?"
"Bobby?" I immediately recognized the voice on the other end of the line.
"Hi Sadie." I could almost hear my mom and sister's ears perking up at the sound of her name. "Is something wrong...?"
"No. I don't know why I called. I guess I just wanted to chat."
"Oh." I swallowed and leaned against the wall, rubbing my free hand on my pants leg. "Um, about what?"
"I don't know. Anything."
"Have you started college apps yet?" It was the first thing that came to mind.
Sadie laughed quietly. "Yeah. I still have a long ways to go though." I started to nod then remembered that she couldn't see me.
"Me too." I scratched my ear, feeling heat creep up my neck and cheeks.
"Yesterday was..."
"Wet." I supplied helpfully and in return got a breath of laughter.
"True." An awkward silence filled the space and I felt my face grow even hotter. "Well. I, um, I should-"
"Yeah me too, I have, um-" Silence fell again. Neither of us wanted to hang up but neither of us knew what to say either. "Tomorrow. You want to grab coffee after school?" I asked quickly.
"Yeah. That'd be nice."
"Great. Then I'll see you..."
"Tomorrow."
"Yeah, tomorrow."
"Okay."
"Yup." Again silence ensued. "I should go- I'm helping my sister male her Halloween costume."
"Oh, that's nice. It's on Wednesday isn't it?"
"Yeah."
"Hm." This time when the silence came I knew what we were both thinking. The challenge would be over by then."
"Well, I'll see you tomorrow then."
"Yeah."
"Bye."
"Bye." I held the phone to my ear for a few seconds after she hung up, listening to the quiet hum in my ear. Then, shaking my head, I put the phone back in the receiver and walked back to the living room.
