Day 13
"What kind?" I looked over at Sadie as she glanced at the menu, her eyes skipping over the options.
"Vanilla bean espresso."
"Okay one vanilla bean espresso and one pumpkin spice latté." The cashier nodded and typed in our order on his little screen.
"Names?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Sadie and Bobby." The guy nodded and scrawled our names on black Styrofoam cups that had little orange pumpkins on them. I paid and we moved off to sit at a table while we waited for our coffees to be ready.
"So. Two days." Sadie said after a second of silence. I exhaled slowly, rubbing my hands through my hair.
"Yeah." I looked into her eyes, searching for a clue of what she might say when the time came, but I got nothing. An awkward silence filled the space between us for a long while when suddenly our names were called from the counter. I nearly jumped out of my chair but quickly recovered and hurried to grab the mugs.
"So you were helping your sister make her costume? That's sweet of you."
I laughed, taking a sip from my mug. "It's kind of a tradition of ours." I scratched my ear, looking down at the floor, feeling my cheeks flush.
"That's cute." The conversation came to a stand-still. At first I felt flushed but slowly it turned into anger. At myself. How. How could this be happening at this point in our relationship? I thought we had bonded somehow- we could talk, we could be comfortable. How were we an echo of that first date now? Feeling oddly confident, I swallowed and spoke.
"Tell me something about yourself. Something most people don't know about you. I'll do the same." It was high time we actually started to learn about each other. Sadie frowned slightly in confusion.
"Well, okay...um. You go first."
"I had my ears pierced once." My face instantly turned red. How had that come out? That was one secret I had never planned to share with anyone because the holes had closed over so nobody knew. "I was going through an emo phase." I muttered quietly. Sadie's eyes were wide and they slowly trailed over my face to reach my ears. A slow smile crept up her face.
"Are you serious? You had your ears pierced?" She started laughing, and, mortified, I buried my face in my coffee.
"Your turn." I said hoarsely when she calmed.
"Okay, um..." Sadie bit her lip, thinking. "Well, one time, a few years ago, I snuck out of my house in the middle of the night- to buy a cat." It took a few seconds to register what she'd actually said but once she did, my eyes widened.
"What?" I laughed. "You wanted a cat?"
"Yup. And I almost got it too- but my phone tracker was on and my mom found me legit seconds before I paid for it. We got a cat last year, but-" She shrugged, smiling as if to say 'what can you do?'
"Do you have any plans for Halloween?" I asked after a few more minutes of laughing.
"Probably some last minute party. They come up every year." She shrugged nonchalantly. "You?"
"I always pass out candy. I-I've never been invited to a party." I muttered quietly.
"Oh." Sadie bit her lip, "They're not that much fun anyway. People get really drunk and start making out and having sex all over the living room. It's funny but not the most ideal way to spend the night." I nodded, knowing she was just saying that so I wouldn't feel bad. We both drank our coffee and soon enough the sun started setting and our cups were empty.
