PERCY

Percy tried to get what the romans said. He could hardly understand tiny bits of questions, conversations and stuff:

"What will happen if we can't get them back?"

"...so scared..."

" There he is!"

"...hot!"

"I'm tired of all this..."

"... stupid Greeks."

"...doubt him.."

"...I'd rather go back..."

Percy could feel the anguish almost solified in the air. Everyone around him was upset, most were scared, some were angry and a few were crying.  As for himself, he was rather annoyed. He wanted a break from all the stupid situations he was- unfortunately- used to live almost everyday. He was seriously starting to think that he would rather present an English exam than to go on this demigodish adventures on a daily basis- which meant he was really sick of all this.

Okay, he understood that being the son of a god entailed tons of 'responsibilities' and dangers, but -hey, he was just asking a day off! If possible, with his memories complete, his body unharmed, and the world not crumbling down. Percy remembered seeing somewhere a TV commercial starring Superman. With the aid of visual effects, the dude flew all around the world, got to save the girl, kissed her and then turned to the camera with a Colgate smile, saying: 'Grano', the only oatmeal cookie that gives you the energy to save the day. Percy snorted at the memory. Pfff yeah, sure dude, if that can make me defeat Gaea, I can already have a box of those cookies. If only his demigod life were as easy as using visual effects and saving the girl with an oatmeal cookie... Percy would need much more than that to defeat the giants, evil Mother Earth, and rescue Annabeth- wherever she was.

"PEOPLE OF THE EARTH!" Leo's amplified voice boomed through deck. "TODAY WE'RE GONNA KICK THE BUTTS OF THOSE GRUMPY DIRT MONSTERS!" The crowd cheered "WERE GONNA BRING BACK OUR FRIENDS, ESPECIALLY THAT CHICK, JULIE, 'CAUSE SHE'S SO HOT!"

Percy and Hazel facepalmed. There was no changing Leo. Some of the people snickered, but most of the faces remained grim. They had all fought monsters of some kind, but for the majority it had occured inside camp jupiter or some other 'ordinary' scenario. Today, they were going straight into enemy declared and infested territory. They all felt the weight of the war against Gaea more heavy in their hearts.

"What if they don't make it to the ship?"

Silence prevailed for what seemed like minutes.

"They will" Gathering himself, Percy had spoken up. "We are together, we stand strong. And if they really don't make it... well everyone is free to leave whenever you feel like it".

A boy's gasp caught his attention. He seemed horrified by what Percy had just said. His hair went unruly in al directions, his lips were pursed and he looked angry.

"You'll just let them go... like cowards do?"

"It doesn't make you a coward to value the opinions and the free will of you lot, dude." Percy tried to look poised, in control.

"Oh, it is!", the boy- Fred, Percy remembered- laughed maniacally. "Everybody will run, and I'll never see Anne ever again!" And that's when he broke down. He started crying, his sobs stained with fear. Some of the romans glared; Fred shouldn't cry this openly. Romans didn't cry- it was against their unspoken code. The legions of the Eagle should always stand tall and proud, be cocky, be the kickass side of the world. They shouldn't cry like babies. Especially NOT in front of the Greeks.

Percy understood how that worked, but he refused to let the tripulation of the ship break down right before a battle. So he started to say what for him sounded suspiciously similar to a speech the principal of Goode-High had delivered to the students before competitions months ago. "I don't want you guys to pretend you are stronger tan any problem. I know that none of us are. I just don't wanna see you crying over something that hasn't even happened yet. If something does happen, then cry all you want. I know how you feel. Lost. Afraid. Okay guys, it's normal..."

The next part was completely made by Percy:

"But we're just about to go into battle. Let's be hypocrite today, guys. We have to hide our tears and show brave, scary faces. Today, Gaea's army has to fear us. 'Cause today, we're scary-trained-killers, against those good for nothing monsters. Right? We'll get our friends back." Wow, man, he told himself, were did you come up with all that? He was surprised at how much a praetor he sounded. Still, he left his self-congratulating thoughts for later, if there was one. Percy raised his fist in the air:

 "WHO'S WITH ME?!"

The crowd cheered. Even Fred's face seemed to lighten a little.

"For Rome! For Greece!" They all hailed and raised their swords, shields and spears.

Percy smiled, and craned his neck, looking for Annabeth, searching her approval.

Then he remembered she wasn't there, with him. Anger rushed through his veins, cold and deadly. He clenched his fists, willing himself to focus on the battle ahead. He felt someone's presence dropping beside him. It was Leo.

"So... you ready, Fish Man?"

"Yeah. Just... don't call me Fish Man, unless you want me to ask Poseidon to turn you into a guppy fish". It was meant as a joke, but Leo suddenly looked nervous. He cleared his throat. "Guppy fish? I love guppy fish. But let's play Greeks and Monsters first, shall we?"

They laughed together. The calm before the storm.

The Argo II landed. The demigods aboard roared, and their shouts shot through the air like augurs of death.

OoOoOo
