(note: i started writing this when i was 11, it's super embarrassing but i like to keep it up to look back on. please don't judge too harshly.)

Your name is JOHN EGBERT. You are FOURTEEN years old and today happens to be your first day of HIGH SCHOOL. You're feeling extremely NERVOUS, as this is a completely new school with new ROOMS and new PEOPLE. You have no idea where to go.

Luckily, almost everyone here appears very friendly! You approach the nearest people - at least, the nearest people who seem to know what they're doing. These two people- a tall boy with bleach-blonde hair and a girl, who looked very similar to the boy, except for her hair, which was a more natural blonde- didn't seem to be too busy, so...

"Hi! Um, do either of you know where the..." you pause for a moment to look at your schedule. "...the Science classroom is? I'm new here and I don't really..." you trailed off. The blonde girl smiled a bit, and replied, "Yes, we do. That happens to be our next class. You can follow us, if you would like, after Dave is done with... whatever he is doing." She elbowed the boy, who was staring into a mirror inside of his locker. "Huh? Oh. Yeah. That'd be cool. I guess." The girl rolled her eyes, and you realized that maybe you'd picked the wrong people to talk to. Obviously, both of them were very popular and cool. The boy- Dave - was obviously extremely cool. He wore shades and a red hoodie and skinny jeans - regular coolkid attire. The girl wore lots of makeup, wore a purple sweater, a black skirt, purple tights and black boots and had a sophisticated aura- a total giveaway that she was popular, or... at least more popular than you.

You, John Egbert, have always been classified as a NERD. A GEEK. Anything along the lines of those two words. You've never had any "cool" friends - or many friends at all, for that matter. This wouldn't be any different. These two would probably start hating you the first conversation you engaged in. "C-cool, thanks." You smile. You weren't really used to people being so nice to you - especially people like the two in front of you.

Dave slung a red backpack over his shoulder, slammed the silver locker door shut, and announced, "'Kay, Rose. Let's go." The girl, Rose, looks over at you, and motions for you to follow. Dave begins to walk, Rose following him, and you trailing behind them like a lost puppy. A few seconds of silence - Silence being the sounds of lockers being shut and highschoolers talking unreasonably loud - was broken when Dave said, loudly, over the crowd - "Hey, so, what's your name?"

Was he talking to you? Of course he was. Sort of caught off guard, you stammered back "U-uh, I'm John. John Egbert." A pause, and then, "Egbert, huh? Cool." There was a a hint of a smirk lingering in his voice. You could already tell he didn't like you. Obviously, he was making fun of you. Crestfallen, you gazed down at your blue Converse, continuing to walk down the long hallway until Rose instructed you to turn.

You found yourself in a large room - up against a wall - with a tiny young woman with a welcoming but strict voice instructing your classmates on where to sit. Dave and Rose were seated together. You notice that your step-sister, Jade, is in this class, and is located at the very front, and other classmates- with strange names and skin that is very slightly tinted grey - are seated in random places around the room. You secretly hoped that you would achieve the honor of sitting in the back with your two acquaintances. Your second choice would be the seat next to Jade, who you've seen a few times before. You don't see her very often anymore, and... "Johnathan Egbert?" snapped back into reality, you nod slightly at the teacher, while also noting that she calls everyone by their full names, which you do not appreciate. She directs you to the back of the class - "there next to Rosaline Lalonde and David Strider." Your heart jumps a little, but you nod again, and take your assigned seat. Glancing over at Dave, you realize he's smirking at you. You tilt your head to the side a little, and mouth the word, "What?"

Quickly, he turned his head away from you and up towards the teacher, who was now explaining rules, and it was as if he was trying to avoid eye contact. There was never any eye contact between the two of you anyway, as he refused to take his sunglasses off, but nonetheless, he still seemed nervous and... sort of shy whenever he gazed over at you - which he did frequently.

After pondering the situation and coming up with absolutely nothing, you allowed your imagination to give you an explanation for why this was happening.

He likes you.

What?

No. He doesn't like you, stupid, and besides that, you are not a homosexual, and neither is he. He can't be. And even if he was, there is no possible way someone like him would want to be with someone like you. You're not even sure if he wants to be your friend, much less your boyfriend. you scold yourself - you can be such an idiot sometimes. Even if he is really cute... You catch yourself. What is wrong with you today? You shake your head rapidly, as an attempt to clear every single thought of Dave out of your head.

But you can't.

You have a crush.

On Dave Strider.

Dave Strider, the coolkid, the self absorbed, arrogant, but still impossibly cute coolkid.

And you hate yourself for it.

As a very unfortunate stroke of luck, the two of you have almost every class together. Not only that, but you sit next to each other in each and every single one of those classes. One of your teachers allowed you to choose your own seat, and, surprise, surprise, Dave chose the seat right next to you. He then also noticed your very obvious blush, and gave you one of his signature smirks. You could feel your heart jump up to your throat. You sound like some teenage girl, fallen head-over-heels for some jock that she has no chance with, just like in movies.

But that's essentially what you are.

The one thought that slithers through your brain, over and over, reoccurring every single millisecond of the school day, is simply:

This isn't good.

Hi! Author here, obviously. Um, this is my first fanfiction, so... if you'd like to review it, feel free!

*I made Jade his step-sister for some unknown reason. Timeline things are way too confusing, so, I'm going to try to make it a little more simple. Thank you! ^^
