"Shit!" Rose exclaimed, bolting upwards, covering her mouth. She'd never say anything like that, but the curse escaped her lips as smoothly as the "I love you" had previously. Perhaps Jade was delirious with fatigue? Maybe she hadn't heard her after all.

A lamp flickered to life, and a soft giggle mocked Rose. "Dave is going to be psyched." Rose took in a gulp of air. "You don't..."  She felt an emerald gaze upon her and she shuddered, anticipating Jade's next words.

'Well, of course I do, silly." Jade said. "I was dropping hints the entire time you were here..." Rose met Jade's eyes. "Dave told me months ago. I promised not to tell you what he said, but we've been talking about you and me ever since. I thought it was time, so I was going to say something ... but you beat me to it." Jade stood and flipped on the lights. "Come sit with me," she said gently, scooting onto the edge of her bed. Rose's breath caught in her throat. "I have some leftover popcorn. You can pick the movie. I know it's late , but... I don't think either of us will be going back to sleep."

A smile tugged at the corners of Rose's lips.  "Before we do that ...Jade, could you pester Dave for me?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It had been two hours since their last movie ended, and Dave was dead tired. John told him to sleep, but he insisted upon staying up with the insomniac. "I'm sorry, I really don't have anything else to do." John was rummaging through his supply of board games, trying to find one Dave would like. "I'm a terrible host."

"Dude, I keep telling you," Dave smirked. "Truth or dare." John whirled around. "Dave, you know I can't trust that game. Too many variables. Who knows what will happen?" He lifts the lid of an Apples to Apples box, only to find it missing half the cards. "Well duh, that's what makes it fun." John discards the box and playfully crosses his arms. "If you really want to... I guess." John takes a seat next to Dave. "You start, since this is your favourite and all." Dave scoffs. "Not my favourite. You just don't have any cooler games. My favourite game is Life but you're far too lame to own it. Truth or dare, nerd?

"Truth," John chirps, knowing from Dave's smug expression that he has made a terrible choice. "First girl you kissed?" John's face contorts a bit, then suddenly he doubles over, laughing. Dave peers over him, concerned. "You uh... you okay, ma-" John sits up. "Dave," he manages to get out in between breaths, "look at me! You think I've ever kissed a girl?" Dave pushes up his shades. "Just a generic question, bro. I mean, you're sorta cute." Oh, shit. He quickly finishes, trying desperately to come back. "Chicks dig nerds, I've heard." Nice.

"Must be why you can't get a girlfriend," John slams back, uncharacteristically sarcastic. Dave clasps his hands to his heart, wincing. "Ow, man. you got me." He sneaks a long look at John's eyes - though, he doesn't really have to sneak, what with his shades and all. Something is off in those endless spheres of blue. Something is in disarray. Dave, after a few moments of convincing himself, opens his mouth to ask what's wrong, but...

"Truth or dare?" It catches Dave off guard. He stumbles with words, and 'dare' tumbles from his lips. No. He never chose dare, and for good reason... "I dare you to take off your shades!" God. I knew this was coming. "No, John. You won't... I just can't, man." John leans forward. "Come on! I'll pick dare next time and you can make me do something totally embarassing. Do you have like, cataracts or something?" Making the subject lighter as usual.  "Please don't, you won't think of me the same." John rolled his eyes. "It's not like I'm asking anything big. It's just the rules of the game, y'know?" Alright. It's just one of your biggest secrets, who cares, right? It can't be worse than... that other thing. Deep breaths, Dave. He brings his fingertips to his shades. "You have to promise you won't freak out, though." John smiles, with such genuine care that Dave's fear nearly melts away.

"Don't worry about it." A sharp exhale pierces the air... and Dave slowly lifts the things he's hid behind for so long. He rubs his eyes a bit, blinks, and is greeted by an awed John. "They're red!"  Dave's heart sinks in his chest. It really wasn't a good idea. "That's so neat!!" He senses the tears about to come, and quickly pushes the glasses back up the bridge of his nose. "Albinism -like those rabbits. I guess you're more like a rabbit though, Bucky." John glances down self-conciously. "Kidding, bro. It's cute." Shit! Strider, you really can't control yourself, huh? Idiot. Dave quickly gains composure. John grins again. "No, but Dave, that's... Why would you hide that?"

He looks down. "Didn't used to. Kids are cruel though, you know? Had to start wearing this in middle school to stop the bullying. It wasn't soft-core, either. I got pulled into the janitor's closet for an 'exorcism' once." Seeing the horror on John's face, he continues as fast as he can - "But it stopped right away after I got these, and it's all good now. School board makes sure all the substitutes know about me so I'm not forced to take them off. But after all that, I just... I really started to hate my eyes, man. Mostly it was more about hiding them from myself."

He takes them off again and folds them. "They're ugly old things, though. I just can't bring myself to stop wearing 'em." John puts his hands over Dave's, and takes the glasses. "If you aren't ready... I can get you some new ones. For Christmas." The tears are back. Dave smiles. "Yeah, John. That'd be awesome."

Ping!

Dave clears his throat, trying to hide the fact that he's absoluely distraught that his crush saw him at considerably one of his least cool moments. "Hold on." His eyes skim the message. "Dude. Rose told Jade she's got a thing for her. Christ, it's been so long!" John's eyes light up. "Did she really?"

Ping!

GG: hold up your end of the deal!!

"What deal?" John asks, peering over Dave's shoulder. Oh my god. I have to do this. Dave squeezes his eyes shut. "If you thought the last thing was bad, this is so much worse." Panic surges through him, he feels like his lungs are about to burst -- "Dave, are you okay? What's wrong??" cuts in, but he can barely hear. He isn't going to want to hang out anymore, this is the last time. He's going to hate me. Hell, I hate myself, why can't I be normal? Why couldn't we just leave it at my eyes? I'm going to do this. It's been too long. He's practically trembling now, and -

"John, I'm convinced that I'm maybe, sort of, definitely in love with you."

tl;dr - IT HAS BEEN SO LONG. missed you guys! thanks for the positivity. i'm so sorry to have disappointed you.

you don't have to read, it doesn't pertain to the story, i just feel the need to explain myself:

i got into homestuck a long time ago at a certain someone's recommendation. it just so happened that this someone and i were, at the time, dating, like the dumb kids we were. this person was quite a bit like dave and i share a lot of traits with john, so, roleplay and cosplay and all that weeby jazz.

there was a falling out, a pretty bad one, which made it REMARKABLY HARD to write johndave, 'cause, in my dumb fragile mind, it was us. this falling out completely destroyed me. i've only recently gotten better - but i'm much better. and i realized - hey, this stupid event in my life shouldn't prevent me from doing things i like.

granted, i haven't read homestuck in a while and have lost interest for the most part. the next chapter will be the last as writing fanfiction and this site as a whole is ... kinda gross. but it'll be a long chapter and i'll try and make it fun for you guys!

thank you endlessly for your support. it's gotten me through a lot and i'm so glad people are taking time to read my work. my writing style's changed a bit, honestly i think i've gotten worse, but i'm gonna try and get back into the swing of things and do some creative writing again.

thanks again,
