Running
Running, running I can’t let them get me. If they get me all is lost. I have to run; run far away. I can feel my energy exhausting, but I know I can’t use it,not yet.
I can hear the voices behind me, “She went this way. We have to catch her before she activates. Come on”. I know I should recognize the voice, but right now the only thing I can really think about is trying to catch my breath, and reaching the silver door.
I’m running along something hard; slapping my feet and echoing. It’s..it’s concrete; I’m running on concrete. I look around and see the twists and turns. I tap into my mind. I scan through the maps of the city and with a few more searches I find an outline of the sewer system. Make one more left and I can escape. I let the map go, and with a final prayer to whoever is watching I tap into my body and can feel the energy leaving as I speed along the tunnels. It takes only seconds and I can see the door to my freedom. I reach out to grab and pull seeing within my mind the way to open.
I don’t have to struggle it opens with one push from my enhanced strength. I can hear them across the way, “She activated. We have seconds before she gets away. We have to activate too. Now!”
Oh shit, now I’m in trouble. I shove the iron door out of my way and look back one more time; just in time to see the brown leather of the hiking boot and feel the splintering pain as it connects. Sending me to the other side of the sewers. I twist in time to see the walls and just barely get my fist around before I make contact and break through. I smash through wall after wall, and can see them smiling and waiting. One big and built; the other lean and tall.
I can see them, and the tall one gives me a wink before he moves. I blink and there he is in front of me; smiling. I look in his glowing green eyes and find sorrow. Why?
He grins and grasps my chin between his hands and turns my face towards him. His face has a ghostly blue glow about it, but he ignores it, letting go of my chin and checking to see if I am injured. When he’s satisfied he grasps my chin again hesitates and gives a slight smile before he leans in and smashes my lips to his. I can’t help it and find myself moving with him melding myself to him. The pain dulls down to a hum in my ears, but it’s all too soon before he breaks away. When he finishes I can feel the pain bleeding back into me, a fire in my veins. I turn to him with tears in my eyes and ask, “Who are you?”
He sighs and holds me to his chest, and I can barely hear his soft sigh as he whispers, “I’m Project C” I look into his glowing green eyes and see blue orbs reflecting back at me.
Are those my eyes? I look away and feel a stinging pain in my side. I look down and see the syringe before I turn to look at him with confusion. He pulls the syringe out of my side only half full and gives a weak smile. I can feel the contents moving through my veins. I taste the metal on my tongue and know he is putting me to sleep, but I have to ask one more question, “Who am I?” He sighs, and gives me one more soft kiss before leaning in to my ear and whispering, “You’re Project D. Now sleep” He gets up and goes to the other boy. The dark one with golden blonde hair and glowing golden eyes.
I hear him talk to golden boy saying something along the lines of he’s got me, and will take me back. He then comes back to me after golden boy leaves and picks me up. Cradling me to his chest and he takes a deep breath; one more lingering kiss and we run. I am barely conscious as we fly through the sewers; he’s barely looking where he’s going. He’s staring at me the whole time; he seems to be fighting something. A pained expression on his face like he is being tortured.
I ask, “What’s wrong?”
He stares at me, and sets me down struggling to smile. He bends down until we’re looking eye to eye. His glowing green and mine causing his face to glow blue. He bends down lower until his lips are at my ear. He grabs my hand and whispers, “Remember. If you can. Remember for me” He gives a small smile as I stare up into his neon green eyes. I know I can no longer fight the sleep and slowly close my eyes, but not before I see a tear falling from his right eye, down his face and feel the small splash as it lands on my lips. He stares at the tear wondering what to do. He then bends down and lightly placed his lips on mine.
I inhale and can smell the mint of his breath and can feel his lips brush against mine. It spreads the tear along both of our lips and makes the kiss that much more memorable. The tear is the perfect balance to the taste of his lips. The perfect taste almost like mint. I breathe in his scent again and relish in it; remembering it.
He laughs his chest heaving up and down as we continue to kiss and I continue to slip into unconsciousness. There is lines of fire where skin touches skin, and it is all too soon before he has to pull away, and I slip into the dark enveloped in his scent, my lips tingling with flame and the bittersweet taste of the tear are the last thing I know before I am swallowed whole and forgotten.
