Trying to be normal

I gotta hurry up. I look up at the clock and see it ticking down to the bell. I grab my clothes and put them over the suit. When that is done I look in the mirror and take my hair out of the low ponytail, and watch as my eyes fade back once again to their dull brown.

I grab my bag, and hightail out of the bathroom into the middle of the hall. I’m almost to class when I hear a loud shrilling. It’s bursting my eardrums, and resonating throughout my skull. I collapse on the floor, and try to drown out the noise by placing my hands on my ears, but my enhanced hearing won’t shut it out.

I know I’m screaming, but I can’t do anything until this ringing stops. I endure the torture for another twenty seconds until it finally stops with a pop.

I unclench my hands from my head, and keep my eyes closed cursing myself for not remembering the bell. I had to endure the torture last year, and everyone is used to my spaz attacks when it happens. At first it was the same, but as the year went on I grew used to it, and only flinched. Although spending three months away has made me vulnerable to it once again.

I sense a presence near me, and snap my eyes open to see a blurry image. It looks like a person. I look down, and see hiking boots. A hand is being offered towards me. I grab it with my hands feeling like jelly, and pull myself up.

I let go, and grab my stuff that fell when I spazzed. Before I was able to grab it a hand snapped out and grabbed it placing it in their arms. I look up, and see myself staring into hazel green eyes.

His hazel green eyes. I feel myself blush as I take my things that he offers out to me. He’s giving a slight crescent moon smile showing off a dimple, and crinkling up one of his eyes.

I feel a hot sensation in my cheeks, and know that they are tomato red. I stare at his facial features, and notice how his face has a nice blue glow.

BLUE GLOW!

My bionics are showing! I grab my stuff, duck my head, hiding my eyes and offer a small apology before I rush through the hall trying to find my locker. I speed past the 400’s, 450’s and finally get to my hall. I pass the lockers and think to myself the numbers 509, 510, 511, 512, 513. I see the tall rusty green locker that they gave me this year, and grasp at the door. It pulls open thanks to my enhanced strength, and slams against the others. I take my stuff out of my bag, and throw it in there being sure to hang my other hanging open door mirror on the front. I snap it open, and see my eyes glowing blue the circuitry running through the iris.

Damnits! He saw them! How could I have let him see them? My secret will be revealed, and then my life will be ruined.

How could I have been so stupid? Not prepared for the bell; screaming like that. At least he was the only one who saw it. Imagine what would have happened if Riley was the one who helped me.

I watch my eyes and wait for them to fade back. The circuitry dulls down, and the glow disappears. Until I am left with neon blue eyes that are slowly being swallowed by dull brown. I wait until I am sure they are back to normal, and then I slam the mirror shut, and grab my health textbook. I run through the halls trying to keep a ‘normal’ pace until I get to room 407 Health.

I glance through the window, and see the teacher waving me in a scowl spread along his face. He seems like the type of teacher that should be called Sir. I walk to his desk my head down, and he asks, “Who are you?

I answer, “My name is Dawn sir, but I sometimes go by D”

“Why are you late?”

“I have sensitive hearing Sir, and I wasn’t prepared for the bell”
