Faking Sleep

I wake to a gentle pressure on my head, and can ear Ms.Hilee clicking her tongue at me and lecturing C, “I told you to be safe! You’re not supposed to disturb her wound, and the only reason I left was for you two to have some time alone!” she stops to take a breath and that’s when C gets his word in, “I’m sorry Mam. I didn’t know the amount of pain it would cause i I hugged her. She seemed to have a fairly high pain tolerance, and I thought that she wouldn’t notice it” he takes a small breath before he continues, “Ms.Hilee, she won’t tell me what happened to her arm, but maybe you could shed some light on it”

I hear Ms.Hilee hesitate and know they’re both looking to the bed to see if I’m still unconscious I fake an exaggerated breath and know that she believes it, but C seems hesitant. Ms.Hilee takes a deep breath and starts to talk, “Dawn is a very special girl; she is unlike any child I have ever met in my lifetime. Last night she was doing business, and as I’m sure you know there was a jailbreak last night. She was doing her business when she got jumped by one of the escaped prisoners. He stabbed her in the arm, and then left” she trails off.

I can hear C sigh and him ask, “Didn’t Bionicca get stabbed too?”

Ms.Hilee retaliates right on the spot, “I don’t know. What do you think that I know who she is and where she is at all times? I’m just the school nurse!” I crack a smile at that and can hear C stuttering an apology.

I decided that I’ve heard enough and slowly open my eyes with an exaggerated yawn. They both stop and turn to look at me. I smile and say, “Who do I have to hit to get some food around here?”

Ms.Hilee stumbles, but C is right ahead of her, “I have a few granola bars in my backpack; just give me a minute” He ducks out into the hallway to grab his backpack; tripping into Ms.Hilee’s desk on the way out.

Ms.Hilee turns to me and asks, “You were awake for that part weren’t you?” I nod and she sighs, “You’re getting sloppy. Getting stabbed by a prisoner, and letting him get that thing under your skin! You’re lucky that you came to me. They really could have hurt you if they knew who you really are” she sighs again before doing a routine check on my arm.

She unwraps the bandage and checks underneath to see if it’s infected or anything, “You’re fine, but next time don’t let them stab you with a knife” she wraps it again and I hear a small knock and see C standing there.

He holds up his hand filled with granola bars, “Got you some energy zips. Eat up” he throws them to me and I see that they are Honey Nut granola bars.

I mumble a thank you before I unwrap one and take a bite out of the crunchy texture covered with caramel. Something weird passes through my mind before I unwrap the second one, “Hey C”

He comes to sit on the edge of the bed I’m laying on, “Yeah”

“Why do you call them energy zips?”

He pauses and answers, “It’s what my friend used to call them, and I guess it just stuck”

I puzzle through my mind wondering to myself, ‘He knows just about everything about me that I study bionics, I dislocated my ankle, I eat Honey Nut granola bars, and that I call them energy zips! It’s like he knows me, but from where?’

I offer the second bar to him and he takes it splitting it in half for us to share. I ask, “How long have we been gone?”

He doesn’t even look at the clock as he responds, “Seventeen minutes”

I turn to Ms. Hilee and ask if we can go now. She nods yes and I sign out. She waves goodbye and mouths, ‘He could be a keeper’. Then she winks and gets back to work.

I grab C’s hand and we go back to Genetics. I turn and see a figure following us as we walk. I let go of C’s hand signaling for him to go ahead of me. He complies and continues. I wait for him to turn the next corner before I hide behind the other corner lying in wait for our pursuer.
