"Lana. Wake up," an irritated voice said.
I squinted my eyes open, letting the light burn inside my skull. I groaned as the harsh ache seeped into my head.
"There you are," Sophie said. "We're leaving in twenty minutes."
"What?" I sat up.
"Remember last night?" Sophie asked.
"The part where I found out that my only friends are werewolves or the part where I got super drunk and fell into the pool?" I sighed.
"Good job," Sophie smiled. "Now go get ready."
I rolled out of bed and into the bathroom. I vomited in the toilet, took a shower, and changed into a sky blue T-shirt and black leggings. I made sure to grab sunglasses out of the mirror cabinet.
"Hurry up!" Sophie pounded on the door. "And don't vomit in the car."
"Okay," I opened the door. "I'm ready."
"Damn, you look hot for someone who's hungover," Sophie laughed.
"Thanks," I grumbled. "How did you get in here, anyways?"
"I came in with you last night," she explained. "That old dude downstairs didn't even stop snoring."
"So you spent the night?"
"Yeah, I wanted to make sure you didn't wake up and choke on your own bile," she said.
"Gee, thanks," I said, grabbing my gun and heading down the stairs.
Sophie followed me, and Lupe looked surprised to see that I had a guest.
"Want me to make breakfast?" Lupe asked. The thought of eating made me nauseous.
"No, no I'm good. Thanks," I said. "I'll be back soon."
"Bye," Lupe said.
Sophie and I went out the door and into her car. Sophie gave me an excited look. "Are you excited?" She asked.
"I've hunted before," I said, buckling my seatbelt.
"Not about that," Sophie started driving away. "About finally spending time with Dominic."
"What?" My face turned red.
"I've seen the way you act around each other," Sophie said. "He really likes you, you know."
I scrunched up my nose.
"What?" She laughed. "It's true."
"After last night, I'd be surprised if he even wants to talk to me."
"He'll talk," Sophie said.
"Who said I wanted him to? He's a werewolf. He's evil," I said.
"So you think I'm evil?"
"I don't think so. There's something different about you," I said.
"You mean I'm your friend."
"I never said that."
"Admit it," she said. "We're friends. Werewolf or not."
"Fine, but I don't have to like you," I teased.
Sophie pulled up in a small parking lot in front of Marshy Trail. Dominic, Mim, Calvin, Amelia and Luke were all gathered in a circle by the trail.
"You're looking better," Luke smirked as I climbed out of the car, putting my sunglasses over my eyes.
"Shut up," Sophie said, annoyed.
"Guys," Calvin said. "I have two maps, both marked with the areas we need to cover. We'll split into two groups, and meet back up here in three hours. Got it?"
"So me, Lana, Dominic and Mim, and then Calvin, Amelia and Luke," Sophie said, earning a glare from me.
"Sounds good," Calvin handed one of the maps to Dominic.
"Let's go," Sophie grabbed the map from Dominic's hands and walked into the woods, forcing Dominic, Mim and I to follow her.
"You doing okay?" Dominic asked, hiking up his backpack.
"I'm fine, you?" I said.
"Great," he cleared his throat.
I walked faster to catch up with Sophie, who was happily moving through the trees.
"Why would you do that?" I hissed in her ear.
"Do what?" She asked innocently. "And I think he's listening in on us."
I looked back at Dominic, who was looking straight at us. He turned his head away, and said something to Mim, who was silent as ever.
I had almost forgotten about their super hearing. Along with that, werewolves also had super strength, increased agility, and rapid healing.
About a half hour after we had started walking, I spotted something.
"What's that?" I asked, pointing in the direction of the gray structure.
Sophie smiled. "Let's go check it out."
Dominic and I followed behind her. Mim seemed hesitant to approach the strange structure, but still tailed behind us.
When we got closer, we could see that it was a rectangular cement building. There were no windows or doors on the outside, and everything about it screamed reclusive werewolf pack.
"Maybe there's something at the top," Sophie suggested, and jumped ten feet into the air onto the building.
"Here," Dominic said, holding out both of his hands, expecting me to put my foot in them. I gave him a weird look. "What, are you going to walk up the side?"
I huffed and let him boost me up. He and Mim jumped up with us.
"There's nothing up here," Dominic said, confused.
"There," Sophie said, pointing at the flat, cement roof.
I followed her finger to see a tiny, nebulous window. Mim got down on her hands and knees and peeked through.
"What is it?" Dominic asked.
Mim looked up, her face flushed white. "It's a bomb."
