After winning the game, Sophie drove me to Calvin's house for the party. I was noticeably quiet as I plotted how to get Calvin alone in his own house.
"You okay?" Sophie asked as we pulled onto the street in front of Calvin's house, or rather mansion.
"Just lightheaded," I said. My hands were shaking, so I shoved them in my pockets.
Sophie checked her makeup in the rearview mirror, and we made our way up the sidewalk to Calvin's house. His house was enormous, probably at least three stories tall. I could see a basketball court in the backyard. His driveway was the longest I had ever seen, and was already filled by at least twenty cars. Another forty were on the street.
Sophie walked in without knocking, and I followed her. The inside of his house was even more grandiose than the outside, and was full of teenagers.
"I'm going to go look for Amelia!" Sophie yelled over the music. "Do you want to come?"
"I think I'll just look around," I told her.
She disappeared into the crowd of dancing teens, leaving me to stand awkwardly in the doorway. The door opened again, sending a cold shiver down my spine. I turned around to be greeted by my other friends.
"Lana!" Luke said, engulfing me in a tight hug. He let go before I stopped breathing.
"Are you okay?" I asked. "You fell pretty hard."
"I'm fine," he said. "It just looked bad, that's all."
Dominic and Mim filed in behind Luke. I eyed them suspiciously, but they didn't seem to notice.
"Hey," Dominic said cutely. Well, everything he said was cute.
"Hey," I said awkwardly, wishing I could be as suave as him. It was probably because he wasn't trying to flirt with me, and I was desperately crushing on him.
"Do you want to dance?" He asked.
My body heated up, and I contained an embarrassingly wide smile. "Sure."
Dominic led me onto the dance floor, and Luke took Mim's hand and forced her to dance.
Dominic started dancing, but I was facing a crisis. It was club music, and I had no idea how to dance. I tried to copy his moves, making him laugh.
"Don't you know how to dance?" He asked.
I shook my head.
"Then I'll have to teach you," he smiled. He started to teach me how to dance, but was cut short when the music changed to a slow song.
"I know how to dance to this, though," I put my arms around his neck. He looked surprised, and wrapped his arms around my waist. I put my head on his heart, and listened to the sound of it beating.
We spun around for what seemed to be merely seconds. I closed my eyes, and focused on only Dominic. I wondered if there was any possibility that he liked me back, the smallest chance that he had offered to dance with me because he felt something.
Before the song could end, I opened my eyes to look up at him. His eyes met with mine, sending warmth pulsing through my blood. The feeling dissipated when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Calvin walking up the stairs. I remembered what I came here for.
"I'm sorry," I pulled away from him. "I have to go."
"What?" He asked, confused.
I ignored him, and took off running towards the stairs. I stealthily climbed up, and followed Calvin. He walked all the way up to the third floor, and down the long hallway. I watched from the staircase to see what door he went through. He walked through the one at the very end of the hallway, and closed it behind him. I pulled the gun out of my purse, and hid the knife in the back of my pants.
I snuck through the hallway, and reached the door. I sighed, thinking of Calvin. The boy who had accepted me into his friend group, the boy who had driven me home after I almost died. He was a werewolf. And I kill werewolves.
I placed my hand on the doorknob and opened it in one swift motion. I pointed my gun, and was surprised at what I saw inside.
Calvin stood looking out a large window, his back to me. The big room was completely empty.
"What is this?" I asked. He didn't answer. He didn't even turn around. "What is this!"
"Jesus, Lana, don't scream," he turned to face me. He didn't even glance at the gun I had pointed straight at him.
"Did you know I was a hunter?" I asked. "Are you part of Jake's pack? Are you the Alpha? Are you killing people?"
"You have a lot of questions," he sighed.
I walked five feet closer to him. He didn't move at all.
"Answer me," I demanded.
"You don't want to do this, Lana," a masculine voice came from behind me.
I whipped around and pointed my gun to the doorway. There stood my so called friends: Dominic, Mim, Sophie, Amelia and Luke.
"You too?" I asked, shocked. My gun was pointed directly at Dominic. "All of you?"
"Just let us explain," Dominic held his hands up in surrender.
"I was here to kill you this whole time!" I screamed. "You made me think I was your friend! You tricked me!"
"It wasn't like that," Sophie said. "We didn't even suspect you where a hunter until Mim got suspicious."
I trained my gun at Sophie, who took a step backwards.
"You're not going to hurt her," Dominic said, making me point the gun back at him.
"You have two minutes to explain everything or I'll put a bullet in your sister's brain," I told Dominic, now aiming at Mim.
"Okay," Dominic said quickly. "We didn't think you were a hunter when you first got here. We weren't planning on sitting with you again at lunch. We normally don't talk to humans that often, and we were going to have Sophie ditch you. I told them to let you stay because you seemed so different. When you froze after Luke asked you about hunting, Mim started to suspect you. She works in the office, so she sent someone down to deliver the note for you to go to Mr. Barton's room. She thought that if you could get out of the closet, it would prove that you were a hunter. But you never made it out, so I rescued you. We didn't suspect you anymore until Jake died on the day you were absent. We knew he was a werewolf, and his pack must have moved his body so the police would think it was another animal attack. When you sat down at the game, Sophie listened in on your heart rate, and figured you had seen Calvin's eyes, so we planned to get you up here. Just to talk. We've never killed anyone, I promise."
"You've killed," I said as a tear escaped my eye. "I know you've killed."
"How could you know?" Dominic asked softly.
"Because you're a monster!" I screamed. "You're all monsters!"
"Have we ever hurt you?" Dominic asked.
"No," I glared.
"When you first met us, did you think we could ever hurt you?" He asked.
I stared at him. He looked straight into my eyes. He was the same Dominic he was an hour ago. He was the guy who saved me from Mim's test, the guy who asked me to dance with him. "No."
"Then put the gun down," he said. "And we'll help you find the pack that's been killing all these people. We'll help you find Jake's pack."
"I can't do that," I breathed heavily. My hands started to shake again. "I have to kill you."
"Then let's make a deal," Dominic took a step forwards. "We'll work together to take down Jake's pack. And if after that, you still think we're evil, you can kill us." He took a few more steps towards me, and his heart touched my gun. "We won't even try to run."
I looked into his eyes. An instinct deep within me told me to trust him. Every part of me wanted to trust him. He sure did have a lot of faith in me.
I closed my eyes for a brief second, and lowered my gun. Dominic breathed out, relieved.
"Okay," I said. "Where do we start?"
