I lay on my bed, watching the little song birds who flitted about on the window sill. I still remembered the boy who had walked into my room and had talked to me. I hadn't seen him since that night, but he looked like he was from my school. The school where I and...I closed my eyes, trying not to remember. But I was swept away on a breeze of memories. It felt like I was in those awful days again..."Esther! Esther!" my mother's voice called me frantically. I hurried down the stairs and found my mother staring at a slip of paper. Looking over her shaking shoulder, I read it. It was short and plain. My brother had died. My brother, Daniel, my friend, had died. I reached for the note and ripped it.
"It''s not true! It isn't! It can't be!" I cried, tears running down my face. My mother enveloped me in a hug, but I pulled away and ran to my room. I collapsed on the floor and sobbed.
"Why God? Why?" I cried, my tears running onto the wooden floor. I suddenly heard a voice.
"I have plans for you, my daughter...just trust me." It was God. I stood up. God had taken away my brother. My only friend.
"No." I whispered. Then I had shut myself in my room, not eating for weeks. I blocked everything out, and one day, I passed out from fatigue...I cried into my hands as I remembered how careless I had been.
"I'm so sorry, Lord." I pulled my knees up to my face, then felt a hand on my shoulder. A familiar voice sounded in my ear.
"You'll be okay."
