"What are you doing here?" I asked. I immediately recognized the man as a police officer. Wait, the police officer!
"Raymond?" Esther gripped my hand tightly. I looked at her face for a half second, and it was whiter than the hospital sheets.
"It ain't none of your business, boy. Just let me face the girl, and you'll not get hurt." The man stepped towards the bed. I shook my head.
"I'm afraid you'll have to ask her parents first." I moved my hand slowly towards the nurse button and pressed it. The man didn't notice it, but was advancing slowly towards us.
"No need," he growled.
"Why do you want her?" I started stalling.
"'Cause her brother-"
Esther broke in then. "Don't you dare mention him!"
"Too bad, missy. Your brother got my whole family killed!" The man grabbed Esther's arm and twisted. She cried out and tried fighting him.
But the door opened then, and the doctor came in. His face expressed surprise, but soon the situation was under control.
I was rolled back to my room, where I was told that I was being discharged. I wondered about Esther. Would I ever see her again?
