Julia Kirigiri's POV
California - J'adore Art Gallery
May 3rd 11:46AMI sat down at one of the benches at the art gallery that N had told me to go to, and waited around for any sign of a Quartermaster. I didn't really know what to expect, to be honest.
As I was thinking, a man came and sat down beside me. I was planning to ignore him, until he spoke to me.
"It always makes me feel a bit melancholy. A great big war ship floating around in the vast ocean." I assumed that he meant the painting in front of us, which depicted a ship sailing in an ocean. "Really shows how times have changed." He paused before speaking again. "What do you see?"
"A great big ship." I replied, before preparing to walk away. "Excuse me-"
"D." The man said simply. For most people, they would've just thought it was a bit weird to mutter a letter. But for me, it showed signs of something else. "I'm your new Quartermaster."
I sat back down again and took a good look at the 'Quartermaster' before me.
"You're kidding." I muttered.
"Why, because I'm not wearing a lab coat?" He replied back.
"Because you're still young and inexperienced." Usually, a Quartermaster is quite old. But this one seemed as young as ever.
"Age has no guarantee of efficiency." He smirked, having thought that he had made a clever remark.
"Youth is no guarantee of innovation." I shot back at him.
He tilted his head a tad. "I bet I can do more damage sitting on my laptop in my pyjamas before my first cup of earl grey than you can do in one year out on the field."
"If that's true, then why do you need me?" I asked him.
He sighed. "Every now and then a trigger has to be pulled."
"Or not pulled." I smirked. "It's hard to tell in your pyjamas."
Q (as I now called him) got an envelope out of his jacket pocket. "Ticket to Hong Kong. Documentation and passport also included."
I took the envelope and put it in my pocket. "Go on."
Q then got a small box out of his pockets. "And then there's this."
I looked it over a opened it. Inside, there was a small gun.
"Coded with your fingerprints so only you can fire it. More of a personal statement, if I'm honest." He smirked a little, presumably finding his own joke amusing.
"What's this about?" I pointed to a small hole in the box. It was completely empty.
"Standard radio transmitter." Q handed me a small radio device. "Click the button and it will transmit your location anywhere across the globe. Distress signal."
I put the box away, carefully. "A radio and a gun. Not exactly much, isn't it?"
"Were you expecting an exploding pen?" Q shook his head. "We don't really go in for those anymore."
