(THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR THE GAME. NOT MANY JUST PROBABLY TWO ABOUT JAMES KIDD.) A/N I guess this is my introduction? So when I played Assassins Creed IV Black Flag for the first time, I fell in love with James Kidd/Mary Read. Being a fangirl in many other fandoms and being an avid fanfiction reader, I looked to all the websites I knew I could find fanfiction searching for James Kidd/Mary Read fanfictions where they fell in love with the reader or an OC. I found a good couple of oneshots and stories, but not enough to last me long. With school and whatnot as well, I finished reading almost all of them in about two week's maybe? So I decided, even though the only thing I write is poetry, songs, and essays, that I would give fanfiction a shot. If it sucks... I'm super sorry for wasting your time! Actually I know that the first few chapters will be a bit rough until I can get a hang of things. Also I'm not going to try and promise a update schedule (though my goal is every Sunday) because I'm in school, I suffer from chronic migraines, and I get sick all the time. But I will promise to not leave you hanging. There may be times where I will go a month or two without updating but I promise I will finish this story, and if I end up not being able to finish it I will find somebody who is willing to finish writing it. Now I have no idea if anybody will read this, but if you do please, please, please, if I mess up anything or if you have any suggestions don't be afraid to comment or message me! I know I worry about being annoying or having my words taken the wrong way but I don't want any of you to feel like that with me! Just message me and I'll try to respond. Okay this is getting long and annoying and rambley. Happy reading!!!!
The Nassau sun was blistering today, and it made the whole town a sweaty mess of tired pirates. I was working my shop, selling the best quality weapons in all of Nassau. Humming, I go out back to check on my brother. We just got a shipment of weapons from our parents in France. We're actually a quite wealthy family, though that's not something that I let most people know. My name is Jane Cliffsworth (A/N I have no idea just go with it XD). I run a weapons shop in Nassau with my younger brother, Mark. We both told our parents that we wanted more adventure in our lives, and so they said that we could sail to Nassau to set up a shop. Being pirate country, business is pretty good. You just have to watch out for thieves and drunken pirates.
We put the assortment of pistols and swords in their places and decide that we should just close up early today, as there's only an hour or so of sunlight left. Walking home at night in Nassau is not a good idea. For one thing, rumor has it that multiple pirate ships came in this afternoon. If that's true, then there will be drunken men everywhere looking for a pretty face to take advantage of, pirates who will rob you of everything you have, and just plain out creeps. Even if my brother and I are walking together, neither of us feel safe walking out of the store at night.
Mark and I walk home in silence, and after about a twenty minute walk we're at our tiny cottage. It may not be much but it has all we need; two bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and a tiny living area. I take off my bandana, my shoes, and the necklace I got from my mother when I was little. I then go into the kitchen, and Mark follows me. "So what's for dinner Janey?" Mark asks me. "How many times have I told you not to call me that?" I ask him, chuckling a bit. "But I'm looking and I don't see much for dinner. We'll have to go to the market tomorrow." I tell Mark. He is quiet for a moment, and then says "Well why don't we go to the tavern tonight? We can grab some food and a few drinks." (A/N I don't know if the tavern would have food but whatever we'll just say it does) I think that's really our only option unless we want to go without dinner tonight, so I nod and go to grab the stuff I just took off and head out the door.
When my parents came to check on Mark and me in Nassau last summer, my mother was absolutely appalled but what I wore on a daily basis. In Nassau, women are hardly respected. If you're a woman here then it's almost guaranteed that you'll be harassed by pirates. When I moved here, I decided instead of following society's rules of women only wearing dresses and instead I wore trousers and a blouse. My mother didn't like this fact to begin with, but the fact that my clothes were by no means fancy or clean made her even more upset. My mother also hated that I cut my hair, and bandana I wore. But the short hair and bandana is necessary, unless you want to die of heat stroke here in the Nassau sun. To me, I don't care if people think if I'm a woman or man, as long as they treat me as an equal. My mother doesn't agree with me though, and left me a variety of dresses before she left. Some of them I would never be caught dead in, but some of the dresses I do wear occasionally, usually if I'm just going to the market or doing household chores. I was also scolded about never wearing a corset. I only wore a corset on special occasions, and being a "woman of status" wearing a corset should be a thing I did every day. My parents also fuss about the fact that I'm still unmarried, but that's one issue that I don't even like to discuss. One thing I try and get my parents to understand is, even if I am related to them doesn't mean that I, myself, am wealthy. I am an adult woman making her own money by running a shop in Nassau.
On our way to the tavern, Mark stops and grabs his best friend, Bennet. Bennet is like another brother, and when Mark and I moved to Nassau showed us around and helped us grown accustomed to the place. To an outsider, Nassau is dirty and sketchy, but when you get to know the place it has a unique beauty. And to me, Nassau became home.
The three of us walk up the steps and open the door to the tavern, smelling the spiced rum and hearing all of the loud pirates. It's not late enough where everyone is pissed drunk and singing shanties at the top of their lungs, but it will be in an hour or so. And as weird as it may sound, I actually love going to the tavern. There's just something about the feel in there that appeals to me.
Bennet goes up to the cabinet to order us some drinks while Mark and I go to find somewhere to sit. I can tell by the amount of people that the rumors of multiple pirate ships was true. You can tell that so many of the pirates are glad to be home in Nassau.
I look over to one particularly loud table, and see the pirates who basically run Nassau. At the table sat a good couple of pirates including; Edward Kenway, Edward "Blackbeard" Thatch, and James Kidd. I always got a weird feeling from James Kidd, even though I have never even spoken to him.
Bennet finds Mark and I sitting in a corner, with my feet up on one chair making sure nobody tries to take Bennet's seat. He got me a spiced rum, and Mark and himself a normal one. After a drink or two, we decide to get some food. I volunteer to go get it, so I get up and head for the counter. The barmaid is busy trying to break up a small fistfight that started, so I'm forced to sit down and wait. As I'm sitting, I feel somebody walk up and sit right next to me. I turn my head, and see a red scarf, and then realize it's none other than James Kidd. I nod to him, out of curtsey, but I guess he takes it as an invitation to start a conversation.
"Aye lass, ye don't happen to know where one could find a new pistol, would ye?" James asks in one of the most beautiful voices I've heard in a while. It's so smooth, with a beautiful accent, and if I didn't know any better I would say that the voice belonged to a woman. I feel my face heat up, though I have no idea why I would be blushing. Instead of just being quiet like an idiot, I start to speak "Um.... Yeah I guess. Well I mean my brother and I run a weapons shop not too far from here and we have pistols..." Of course. Of course we have pistols it's a weapon shop, what would we sell, vegetables? Why am I getting all flustered? It's probably just the rum, though I can hold alcohol pretty well and I've only had two glasses. Before I can continue to scold myself mentally some more, James says "Well I may have to stop by tomorrow then. Ye don't mind, of course?" It was a statement, but he formed it as a question. Luckily, the barmaid finished breaking up the fight and heads our way. So not to be rude and not answer James's question, I say "Why would I mind? That's why the shop is there, to sell weapons" I say, laughing just a little to make things less awkward, well at least awkward for me. James just smirks at me, and orders rum for his whole table. Before he walks back to his table though, he winks at me. I feel my face heat up again, and look away.
When I finally get our food, Bennet and Mark are starting to get a bit tipsy. Due to the tipsiness of my two best friends, when we finish eating I decide its best we all get home. But for some reason, I can't stop thinking about a certain pirate with a red scarf.
