Chapter 3
A/N So yeah I know the story is probably pretty bad. I'm still getting the hang of writing a story like this, and hopefully in the future I'll be able to go back and change things around a bit so that what I want to be portrayed is done so more clearly. Anyways, here is chapter 3.
We get to the shop, and I open the door for James. "Ladies first." I say, laughing. I see a look of concern pass across James' features. Worried that I might have upset him I say "It's a joke. Don't take things so literally James" When I say this, he looks relieved and starts to laugh. I wonder why that got him upset. Oh well, it's probably not a big deal.
We walk in the shop and I see Mark turn around, looking at me with a look of worry and confusion. "Hey Mark! This is James Kidd. James, this is my brother Mark." I tell them both. They shake hands and I continue, "Kidd here was looking for a new set of pistols, and I was thinking that the pair we got in yesterday would be a nice fit for someone of James' profession." I tell him, and he knows exactly what pair I'm talking about. They're a beautiful set, and by the style I can tell that my father himself was the one that made them. The pistol set is very similar to mine, and of course French. Mark goes into the back room to get them, and I look over to James. He is looking at a painting on the wall, and I try to distract him from it once I realize what painting it is.
"James! Uh, come over here I need to show you something!" I say, trying not to act embarrassed. The particular painting he was looking at was one I painted. My name is on the bottom corner and I know if he sees it he will ask about it. In it, there is a young girl and she seems to be one with the sea. Then there's a ship, and at the helm is another woman, who looks a lot like the girl in the waves. The younger girl is supposed to represent me when I was little, and how I was always loved the sea. The woman represents what I want in the future, which is to sail the waves forever. Being female I would never be respected as a captain, so I know that I can never have my own ship or sail the sea. But one can dream.
James looks over to me, and by the expression on his face I can tell that he's already seen my name. I blush, and just hope that he doesn't ask me about it. "Did ye paint this?" he asks me, with admiration in his voice. "Yeah... I did." I reply, looking at the ground. "It's so beautiful... What's it supposed to mean?" James's asks, "I've always loved the sea, and it's supposed to represent my unrealistic dream of sailing the oceans." I say. "Unrealistic? Why is it unrealistic? Lass, I-" James starts before he's cut off by Mark, who has the pistols. "Okay, I got the pistols. What's your budget and we can work out a deal?" Mark says, looking at James. "Whatever it costs to get the best pistols I can mate." James says, pulling out a bag that I assume is full of Reales. "Well normally I would ask around 3000 Reales for pistols of this quality, but since my sister here-" Mark looks at me with a teasing smile "- seems to like ya, I'll lower it to 2500." Mark tells James. "Thank you lad. But really there's no need to do that. It would be like robbing ye if I took the pistols for 2500." James tells Mark. "If you insist." Mark replies, laughing a little. James gives Mark the Reales, and Mark gives him the pistols. "Pleasure doin business with you, Mr. Kidd. Though I have a feeling this won't be the last time we meet" Mark says, smirking. When we get home I will kill him for this.
"Well I have to head off, got some business to attend to. Pleasure meeting you, Mark. And I hope to see you again soon, Jane." He tells me, turning to walk out. Without thinking, I just shout out "Wait! Why don't you come for dinner at our house, I mean you did help me pick up my spilled basket and it would only be fair if you ate some of it." I say. "That would be wonderful lass. What time would ye like me to come over?" James asks, turning around. "We usually shut up shop an hour or so before sundown, so around then would be fine." I reply, blushing because I can't believe I just invited James for dinner. "That sounds lovely. See ye then lass." James says, sending me a wink before heading out the door.
When Kidd is out the door, Mark turns to me and starts to laugh. "Why are you laughing, have ya gone mad?" I question, chuckling. "No- Its – just- HA!" Mark stuttered between laughs, trying to form a sentence. Once he had calmed down, I playfully smacked him and said "So are you going to tell me why the bloody hell you were just laughing like a maniac?" He looks at me like I'm missing something obvious, and just replies "I told mom. I told her that if she left you alone about the whole marriage thing that you would eventually find someone. I told her that if she arranged a marriage that it would make your life miserable. You needed to find someone who would give you an adventurous life. Oh, I was so right!" Mark says, grinning widely. "I didn't know you talked to mom about that..." I tell him, but I had always wondered why my mother didn't set up an arranged marriage. That's what all of the other wealthy parents do for their children. I guess I really am lucky to have a family who puts my happiness over reputation.
"You know Mark, I was beginning to think something was wrong with me. There was never a man that I felt that I could love. And I know it's crazy to say this but, I feel that I could with James. Of course I don't think I love him yet, but we just met. I know I feel something though." I then realize who I'm saying this to and know that I'm never going to hear the end of it. And Mark is no doubt going to tell Bennet and he is going to tease me too.
Luckily for me, a customer walks in and interrupts our conversation, and I don't have to deal with the teasing right away. But for the rest of the day, the teasing and comments don't stop coming.
