Chapter 1
Music gives us an escape from our drama filled, teenage heart ache driven lives, a chance to actually be a part of something amazing.
It gives us something to believe in.
Well, that's how I see it anyway.
When I was 5, my father left my mother for some young woman and never came back. He left on their 10th Wedding Anniversary. I think that's why it affected my mother so much. Ever since, she wasn't the same. Now she treats me like dirt - beats me, uses drugs, alcoholic and brings a different man home every night. Because of those problems, she can't get a job; therefore, she gets benefits but then spends it on alcohol and drugs. Not food, or cloths, so, every night, after school, I have to go to work, I'm a waitress at a little coffee shop in the centre of town. They don't pay much but I need the money and it’s enough for the basics I just don't know what is going to happen to my mum once I finish school, I want to go to university but I know I have to take care of my mum. Once I get home, I eat whatever there is in the house, and then lock myself in my room to do homework and hide from my mother - and the men. I usually manage to get to sleep at about 2 in the morning, if I'm lucky, then, I wake up at six, make breakfast, then walk to school, I want to get a car but right now, that’s not possible. I only have 3 friends - who know about the money problems, but not family problems - who are my age, 17, and go to my school; they are the best friends that i could ever have. We are a bunch of misfits but we really don't care, we're just happy to have each other. They are called Rose Ashworth, Natasha Booths and Ben Johnson.
Rose has black hair and had blue hair. Yes she's emo and totally awesome! Not to mention, so much fun! Ben is one of the most handsome boys at the school, he had thick brown curly hair and brown hair; he's cute but unfortunately he is gay (apparently even though I notice him staring at tash sometime). Finally Natasha, she has thick, wavy brown hair that's so dark, it's almost black and huge, deep blue eyes. She is my best friend. Me? My name is Olivia Maguire (but my friends call me 'livvi' or 'liv'); I have blonde hair with natural brown highlights; bright blue eyes and naturally tan skin. I'm quite skinny but not the grossly anorexia skinny that the 'it' girls are. Yes, the 'it' girls, every school has them and they are the only ones in the school who really hate me but I don't know why.
I live in a small town in Lancashire, England where nothing happens and my school is ruled by the footballers and 'it' group making my life a misery every time the school bell rings. So that's my life.
The one thing left to mention is my music. When my dad was still here, he had a guitar and he taught me some stuff, after he left, the guitar was mine and I taught myself chords and notes and some theory from computers at the public library. In music at school, I study and study as hard as I can. I want to go to a music collage and pursue my dream of becoming a musician. I also play piano as Natasha was taught when she taught me a little and I taught myself using the school piano when I could. I also try to sing too. I could never afford lessons but I tried to teach myself using my instruments. My friends and my music teachers are the only ones who had heard me sing but i couldn't sing in front of others. I get so nervous that I get pains in my stomach and once or twice I have fainted. I love the way music makes things easier to be said and heard. It sooths the heart from pain - my parents - and I mainly love the way it flows, making each note connect together in beautiful melodies that cannot be expressed by words. My mum doesn't allow me to play music in the house as it reminds her of my dad who was a musician before he met my mum. Our school doesn't do many things to do with music but in two weeks, they are holding a music competition and whoever wins will get £300 also the schools old grand piano. I could really use that money. For the past two weeks, my friends have been trying to get me to enter and finally, they won over, they know how much I need the money. So, for the past week, I have gone out to a field by our house and just played. I haven't told anyone what I'm playing. That's a surprise for them and as far as I know, I have 3 people rooting for me to win and that’s enough for me
