I took a deep breath before looking back at my dad.
“You’re going to be fine.” But I didn’t feel fine. If I had to order my own food, I may throw up again. I can’t go through that embarrassment. Not again.
“Will you, uh, order my food for me?” I choked out the words and tried to avoid making eye contact. He nodded and smiled at me. He knew how much I hated ordering my food. I took another deep breath and opened the door, holding it open for my dad. I didn’t want to mess anything up. I walked inside and saw all the people in their nice clothes. Dresses and suits and heels and ties. I was so out of place with my skinny jeans and band shirt and Converse high tops. I hated this. Why did I have to come to this anyway? I wasn’t going to be of any help to anything and there was really no point in having me here if I wasn’t going to even be talking to anyone. I couldn’t mess this up. I couldn’t embarrass myself.
Just then, a woman briskly walked over to us with a smile on her face. She was looking at my dad, and as soon as she saw me, her smile seemed to disappear.
“Oh. I didn’t know you’d be… babysitting tonight,” She said coldly. She looked at me long enough so I could take in her facial features. The woman had brown eyes and a small nose that pointed more downward than straight. She had a violet type of eyeshadow that actually looked nice with her eyes. Her light blush complimented her cheek bones. She had no freckles like I did, but she did have a small mole about an inch away from her eye. A beauty mark. She was pretty. Too bad her personality wasn’t.
My dad stuck out his hand to shake hers, “I’m not babysitting. I’m bringing a lovely young woman with me to dinner.” The woman laughed and shook her head. My dad introduced her as Sara, his old co-worker. He didn’t treat her as a friend and I was happy with that. I didn’t think he could be friends with someone like her. I was introduced to more people, most of them had names that I had forgotten within ten minutes of the dinner. My dad introduced me so I wouldn’t have to do it myself. I would nod to the person I was getting introduced to and tell them it was nice to meet them, but besides that, I kept my mouth shut. I wasn’t very hungry, so when the waiter came to take all seven of our orders, I just shook my head at him. I could see Sara giving me a dirty look from across the table and I didn’t care. What I did was none of her business.
I liked to see my dad like this. He was laughing and smiling and talking and I could see that he was really enjoying the dinner. I loved hearing him laugh. It was a genuine laugh, not a forced laugh that he would do when I would make a sarcastic comment about something that was on TV. I could tell that he was enjoying being able to have dinner with some of his old friends.
I was careful the entire dinner. Not wanting to spill my water, I kept it out of elbow’s reach. I didn’t fuck anything up, and my dad thanked me in the car for being so well behaved. He told me that I made him proud and that he was really glad that I came tonight. I was happy for him, but I was even happier that I didn’t embarrass myself. I didn’t eat anything at dinner for fear of getting sick or something. I wasn’t all that hungry, but I was really tired. So, when I got in the car to head home, it took no time at all for me to fall asleep.
