That night, things were awesome, even if we just played video games, and ate pizza. It seems like when you are with good friends, it doesn't matter what you do, anything with them is perfect. And that's how it felt that summer night.
After hours of playing video games, we all decided to go outside. It was so much more bearable during the evening; the sun wasn't out and making us all suffer in the heat. I hadn't been living here long enough to know where anything is, and the guys were gracious enough to want to show me around. I said goodbye to my dad, and told him I would probably be home at some point, promising to call if I wasn't coming home that night. After grabbing a couple last minute snacks, we set out. It was around 8 o'clock, and the sun was beginning to set. The wide array of colors of the sky and clouds made the city look even more beautiful. We lived on the outskirts of Cincinnati, so being able to look at all the buildings from the outside made it all the better.
The boys had been living here for about a year or so, and so they knew more about the city than I did. We walked around, looking at all the old shops on the outside of the city, and I listened as they explained to me what shops sold what, and why some were shut down, and how long ago they put up those "Closing" signs.
"This one was my favorite," Mikey said as he pointed towards an old run-down building, "The guy working there was always so nice, but he was a bit old. I guess he fell one morning during the winter, when there was still snow on the ground. His daughter put him in a home. She didn't even bother to keep his store open."
Ray shook his head as he looked at the ground, "I miss that old man, he always secretly gave us free chocolate."
We continued our trek to a small park. There were kids following behind their mothers on their way back home, and a couple that looked no older than 15 years old walking together, smiling and holding hands. It was a peaceful setting. We found a spot in the grass to sit, and we all sat in a circle. I passed around the few cookies I had grabbed before we left, and we all sat in silence, enjoying the sweets. After a few minutes, Frank finally spoke.
"So, Taylor, why did you move here?" The question surprised me.
"Uh, a new start," I faked a smile at my cliche answer, "Shit was hard back at home, living in the same place was getting too stressful. So my dad and I moved."
Frank nodded, but didn't continue the conversation. My answer was probably too bland for his bold lifestyle. I didn't mind though, I was thankful that any of them were actually interested in my life.
They're your friends, Taylor, I had to remind myself. Friends are supposed to care about you and your life.
I directed my attention towards Gerard, who had not spoken much since we had left, besides agreeing with his friends about old shops.
"So, I never even asked you guys; what is your band called? Like, if you ever become big, what are you gonna call yourselves?"
Ray spoke up, "We have thought about that a lot, but we haven't come up with a solid name yet. We were gonna call ourselves -"
"My Chemical Romance," Gerard interrupted, "We've never really been asked yet, so we didn't think it was necessary. But that name is my favorite that we've brainstormed so far."
"I love that name," I began, and looked around the circle and saw everyone's hopeful eyes on me, "I really genuinely love it."
"Aha! The lady speaks! My Chemical Romance it is then?" Frank suggested, and got nothing but approving nods from all his friends, "Thanks, Taylor!"
And there it was, I was there when my best friends decided what name people would hear and cry at the thought of for years to come.
