A very big and special dedication to @KaityElise because of the amazing job she did for the new cover!
Story spoiler fact/hint: There's something on the cover that's very symbolic to the story and it kind of foreshadows what's going to happen later on in the story.
Chapter 4: Tired
"I don't understand how you just can't tell him the truth. 'Honesty is the best policy', or some shit like that. I mean, you never even cheated on Chase."
Sophia sighed, resting her head on top of the smooth counter top. After telling her best friend the events of last night, Lucas ended up picking Chase's side. It irritated her. "Yes, because when it all comes down to it, it's always my fault!"
Lucas stopped watering the flowers in front of him and turned to face Sophia. "Basically," he deadpanned.
With a huff, she propped her head up and glared at man with the watering can. "I'm not responsible for Chase's actions. He was the one that made that assumption in the first place!"
"And you were the one who didn't correct him on it either," Lucas fought back. "You let him believe that you were gone for several weeks because you choose to cheat on him!"
"Ignorance is bliss, Lucas! I rather have him believe that than the actual truth."
"But look where the truth got you. You're in a shit relationship. You're barely holding up with everything. You're so-called-boyfriend is going mad. You have to lie constantly. You might as well get up and get a new identity because you're not the Sophia I remember."
"Okay, I get it," Sophia cried. She didn't know how many times she had this conversation with him. It would be the same thing every time and she had to reiterate what her position was. "I'm lying to protect him, but it seems like no one understands that! I told him a little bit of the truth before and look where that got me? I was locked up, Lucas. There's a reason why I have to lie."
"That doesn't justify anything though," Lucas argued. "You just told him that your da-"
"Can we not talk about this?" Sophia interrupted, rubbing circles around her temples. "I just had a fight with Chase last night and I don't need to fight with my best friend too."
"But you're finally talking about this! We need to fix this, Soph!"
"Nothing needs to be fixed," she snapped.
"Oh yeah because everything is just peachy, ain't it! That's why Chase decided to walk out on you last night and not show up at all this morning! It's all because nothing needs to be fixed. You know, if a man walks out on a woman, it always sceams 'this is the most healthiest relationship in the world!' Yeah, nothing needs to be fixed at all."
"Your scarasm isn't appreciated."
Lucas just raised an eyebrow at her. Sophia met his eyes with a glare. She could stare him down all day if she had to. There was no need to discuss all of this right now. Her best friend didn't want to give up though. So she grabbed the closest thing near her--which happened to be a sharpened pencil--and chucked it at him.
"Bitch."
"Man-slut."
Sophia stood up from her seat and walked to where Lucas was standing. Her best friend eyed her carefully, thinking that she only came over to hit him. All she did was lean against the wall, while her eyes took in the state of the flower shop. They welcomed the silence, allowing it to cool them down a bit.
Looking out the window, she was reminded of Chase's eyes. The clouds covered the blue sky, making the town seem gloomy. Sophia liked the grey setting though. It suited her mood.
