The tide was too strong. Nami regrets what shes done. struggling against the water in huge waves crashing down on her. it was filling her mouth, her nose, she struggled to keep her eyes open, to see where she was, if shes gone away too far off-shore. but her eyes burned. they stung and hurt so much but the pain was nothing compared to the fear she felt. she reaches for the cord strapped to her ankle to her board. she couldn't fight it hard enough.
"I should have waited" she thought.
She knew there would be a storm that day, but she didn't think it would be this strong. She was too overwhelmed by her defeat last week at the annual Hawaii surf competition.
"I wasn't good enough, if i were, i wouldn't be here right now". then she tried to fight the current even harder as she could feel the saltwater filling her throat, her stomach.
She stopped fighting the tide, the endless waves and let them consume her, swallow her.
And as soon as she stopped struggling,in the midst of the crashing waves, the pounding rain, the howling winds, she almost felt at peace. being swallowed by the water. it was cold and harsh at the same time refreshing and healing. It was like she could feel the water carrying her on her back lulling her to sleep.
She felt like this is the end. this is meant to happen. she's meant to die. and then she thought.
"I'm sorry, Jamie. I Love you, Angel".
Nami closed her eyes and let the water consume her and felt herself sinking.
A little further down. on a coral reef, amongst the colorful tropical fish and sea creatures, Someone was watching her drown. In fear and in awe.
It was the closest she had ever come to a human before and now its getting closer.
"its drowning but it's not fighting the water." she thought.
"I wonder what this one is called. the poor thing" to her, humans weren't just humans. they had different colors, and different names.
She wanted to know more about this one. it was so vulnerable. so weak. but that body wont do the human any good. it will die soon.
"Should i save it?" she thought.
And then the observer swam up. her blue-green hair cascading down her scaly back, her blue tail whipped up and down as hard as she could to reach the human faster. As soon as she grabbed the cold, lifeless thing, she started to drag it down to the sea floor. . .
on the sea floor she touched the humans face, it was strange. Dying.
"You look familiar, You feel familiar." she thought to herself as if she was holding in her arms a dear friend she had not seen in the longest time
She brushed her hand on Namis face, and stroked her hair, like she was trying to comfort the unconcious human. With a sharp shell she slit the humans skin behind each ear three times and kissed her ears.
"These will help". she placed both hands on the humans face and read her mind.
"Nami. . .what a pretty name. Hello Nami, Don't be afraid, Don't give up. This isn't how your story ends. wake up, wake up and we can go home..."
